Synopsis
Hark MacArthur, an American High School student in his last year, flies in to Japan for a Study Abroad program he hesitantly accepted knowing he would miss the graduation of all his friends back home. After his Host Family arrives late to the airport to pick him up, he's introduced to Osaka and the surrounding area, familiarizes himself with some of the slang, and is introduced to the school he will be attending as well as some friends of his Host Family. He learns about the differences between Japanese and American high schools, the difference of cultures, and how everyday life in Japan is generally different from life in the States, all while making friends and creating bonds.
Before long though, things start getting strange. People vanish behind lamp posts at varying times of day, office workers begin to emit a powerfully intoxicating miasma after working long hours, foxes begin to show up out of nowhere, and significant historical landmarks are suddenly impossible to enter. Hark swears his homeroom was towards the front of the school, not the back. That his science teacher never liked dogs but suddenly claims to own 3. That the two siblings that belong to his Host Family never had much interest in Japanese folklore but suddenly knew swathes of it.
Strangest of all, one night, when walking out and about with the brother and sister, Rei and Ai Amano, discussing what to do for a science project the following week, a small child with strange ears appears from a small torii gate on the side of the street, then disappears into the torii gate and out of sight. Not only incredibly perplexed but intrigued, Hark decides to attempt the same, to the audible dismay of both Rei and Ai.
Before long, Hark finds himself entangled in a web of conspiracies surrounding Japanese mythology and the cosmos, where his only shot at survival is agreeing to be an agent for the gods to accomplish certain tasks in various worlds, including his own, all while maintaining his High School life and ensuring he keeps his grades up. With the ever looming threat of the barrier between myth and verity being shattered, Hark will have to forge ahead alongside Rei and Hanako to prevent a threat only described to him as "not good for anyone."
