Chapter 2: Panic and the System

Chapter 2: Panic and the System

After staring at the small floating text box in front of me, I looked around to see if it's the same for everyone else, although I couldn't see the boxes, everyone had paused whatever they were doing to stare down before themselves.

It was almost eerie, but I can figure out what's going on right now. Clearly the box is only visible to the user, the information is reminiscent of a video game.

I was reminded of the words that glowing lady spoke just a few seconds earlier, something is going to happen right now. Shiver’s went down my spine when I heard a voice calling out my name.

“Takumi, are you seeing this?” It was Ryo, Jesus, I got scared there for a second. Turning around, I tried to play it cool and not panic like the girls “The flat box? I can't see yours but I'm assuming it's the same for everyone right?”

Ryo nodded, the guy looked ecstatic. Aya Fujimoto, who was next to him, had a more anxious look on her face. “Uhh, kids? What are you all looking at?” that sweet voice came from our bus attendant, all three of the adults looked puzzled and scared as well.

“Do you- Do you not see the rectangular box?” One of the boys, Hiroshi Tanaka had asked, looking a bit confused. “What box? What are you talking about?!” Ms Minami spoke in a panicked and sort of frustrated tone.

You gotta be kidding me, only the kids get video game mechanics and not the functioning grown adults? This is going to be a very bad day, I ought to have stayed home instead of experiencing this fever dream.

Just as the chatter of the students and the panic of the adults started to heighten, a loud rumbling shook the entire room. The still air carried sound and dust particles across, almost making me sneeze. A loud thud, deep and bellowing, could be heard from one doorway.

“What was that?!” someone said, before another thud from a different hallway. I can't help but wonder what fate awaits us inside this room. Before long, multiple very loud thuds echoed across the room. Everyone subconsciously inched towards the wrecked bus, which seemed to be the center of the room.

That was when we saw it, the giant.

About as high as the archway, this fat- almost ogre looking- monstrosity marched slowly, each footstep shaking the ground a little bit, I almost lost my balance just looking at the thing.

It wore a loincloth which wrapped around their waist and left shoulder. The giant had the ugliest face you could imagine, but that's not the worst part. The giant had a spiked club in its hands.

Even that was not the worst part apparently, after one or two girls shrieked, the giant stopped moving. Just standing at the archway, if I had to estimate, he stood about 50 meters tall. The other noises continued, just thud after thud, until more giants blocked every exit.

The 35 of us surrounded the bus, trying to be as far away from each archway as possible.

Heavy breathing, crying, and stuff I really don't want to focus on could be heard from my peers. I'm going to be honest, I am scared. I turn to Rika subconsciously, if anyone knew what to do, it’d be her.

Utter shock, disbelief, trembling and tears, Rika was not going to be of help, I feel kind of bad to dump that pressure on her mentally.

Just then, lights burst into existence, right above our heads. I could feel a small wisp of purple light swirling just above my hair. Looking around, so did everyone else, in different colors though.

Some were green, red, yellow, nobody had purple like mine. One guy, who couldn't make out who, had a black ‘light’ over him. It looked similar to the others but it wasn't emitting any form of light, but instead had glowed ‘darkness’ from it.

“WHATS GOING ON?!” Panicked screaming from Ms Minami. She did not have a light floating above her, I'm guessing the driver and attendant didn't either. Ms Minami was in tears at this point, I can't blame her, I am this close to wetting myself.

The floating wisps of light, all at once, sent themselves down into our heads. I could feel it merging with me, I felt more or less like a sponge taking in a large bucket of water, it was too much to handle. A splitting headache, and a second later it disappeared.

Name: Takumi Satou Variation: All The Possibilities Level 1: 0/10 Exp Trait: Loner

What am I looking at right now? I am so lost. Turning to my fellow pantwetters, just about everyone is as lost as I am. Except Rika...

Rika looked much more steeled, her eyes resembled that of an eagles, her quivering lips now calling out for everyone to get ready. "Everyone! Get ready to fight these things, I know what to do!" she shouted, her voice carried to the walls of the room and echoed back.

"How?! How are we going to fight THAT?!" A scared and confused girl spoke next to her. Rika, unfazed by the situation it seems, spoke with proper leadership and authority, far from her usual reserved attitude "I think that 'Variation' is some kind of superpower. Try it and see if we can fight back."

Huh? How would she know that? She didn't know that this was a generic isekai opening, how would she know about the system-superpower thing? Her attitude change, the newfound confidence literally seconds after that 'Awakening' light, just what the hell happened to you, Rika Kobayashi?!

Ill still take her word for it though, its better than being sitting ducks. I tried pressing onto the screen where it said 'All The Possibilities' but that didnt do anything. Maybe if I shout out my Variation then it would activate, whatever this thing does.

Before I embarrassed myself, Aya took the fall and shouted out her Variation, at least I think that's her Variation "SPLICE!" everyone turned to stare at her, Aya's face went tomato red. So its not shouting, then how do I even use this damn thing?

"Uh, Class rep, how do we even use this 'Variation' thing?" Hiroshi Tanaka said, he was standing next to Rika. Luckily everyone seems to be facing the same problem as me, it almost makes me forget that we are about to die.

Just as we were getting comfortable figuring this stuff out together, another thud, I nearly fell from how it shook the floor. Again, some girl started shrieking, I hate this class sometimes I swear.

"Uhh, try imagining the name and what it could be... I guess?" Rika said in a tone that implied that she knew more than she spoke, at least to me that is. Well now is definitely not the time to get weirded out. Time to activate this thing.

I tried to focus mentally on the name of the thing, 'All The Possibilities' What could that be? The name sort of reminded me of probabilities in math's, like the way it was represented in fractions, decimals and percentages. 'Possibilities' were the denominator in fractions when it came to probability, maybe it has something to do wi-

A blast of visions cover my eyes, every possibility, I cannot see anything but the entire truth. Time is but a wave of probability, events can go in several directions and lead to multiple outcomes, and I can see every direction. Every single probability, denomination, percentage and every single truth, its all but a set of strings tied to the present

I can see all the futures. I can see all the endings, I can see how I will perish, or emerge victorious in this perilous scenario.

There are two main endings to this situation, the one where everyone lives and nobody dies.

And the ending where one person dies and everyone else lives...
