A few generation ago the remains of Earth had been conquered by the Xeon Empire, an interdimensional race of conquerors who saw humans as little more than intelligent beasts. But before even that Earth had been rendered nearly extinct by a number of ecological disasters.  Dozens of apocalypses over tens of thousands of years has rendered Earth all but uninhabitable. It's oceans are gone and one enormous desert stretched across the world.  Matthew thought that he had figured everything out. The Xeon were technologically advanced enough to travel between dimension and to distant stars while the humans had resorted to tribalism, thus resistance was futile. If he kept his head down and worked hard he would be allowed to inhabit one of their cities instead of the deadly wastes that made up the planet.  And it worked, at least until the Empire awoke something that defied all known physics and Matthew killed a monster. Now things are slightly more difficult.
