I altered parts of the worldbuilding in several ways: I try to eliminate logical inconsistencies from canon, I try to make the magic system more interesting (in canon HP even the strongest wizards were only a few times stronger than your average wizard, which is less fun than my version of power scaling, where wizards start out strong, and mages like Dumbledore or Voldemort are like little gods), and I tried to heighten the fantasy aspect (badass forbidden forest for the win!). Self Insert, Harry potter is now Rose Potter, lots of badass fights, and comprehensive AU worldbuilding, what more could you ask for?
