The Elves are gone, annihilated during The Last Night. Since then, magic has become broken, and fatal to any living thing that gets close to it, or those rare people that can control it. Those who can work magic are called Witches, and are considered so dangerous that they must be locked up, or hunted down by a group of Crown-backed agents: the Order of St. Heinrich. Our story begins with a man, a farmer named Kurt Bauer, and his son, Martin.  Kurt returns home from his weekly revels after market day to find his farmstead devastated and his son missing.  He turns to the Witch Hunters for help, who reveal that Martin's survival can mean only one thing: he is a witch, and has been kidnapped by one or more others like him.  As they begin their hunt, Kurt must contend not only with the monsters who stole his boy, but also Martin's would-be rescuers.
