On the planet Elystra, a game eons in the making is being played out. This distant world is home to a race of medieval humanoids, a select few of whom wield extraordinary abillties because of several extra-terrestrial Stones. One of these Wielders is Kelia, the leader of an all-female tribe, whose isolated and secret existence is in danger of ending because of a decree made by her mother. As a result, no children have been born within the tribe in many years. Complicating matters is the arrival of space pilot Maeve and her teenage son Davin, who have fled Earth to Elystra in search of an energy source that will help them beat the powerful race that has invaded the Terran Confederation and subjugated its peoples. Humanity's last hope may rest on their success. Unbeknownst to either woman, a Lightning-Wielder and her twin brother, in possision of a Stone of their own, seek to fulfill a prophecy that will give them unlimited power - and they will kill any and all who stand in their way. Elystra is the board. These are the players. And the fate of the galaxy may be determined by which side wins.
