Synopsis

What to expect: The Unfeeling is set in a dystopian world where society has collapsed due to the widespread use of a pharmaceutical miracle designed to suppress emotions. As the drug took hold, a divide emerged: the paxxers, people who became completely inert to emotions, and those who resisted the medicine, now living as outcasts on the fringes of society. The story alternates between two perspectives: the three mysterious “Rückenfigur”, symbolic entities that reflect internal turmoil, and the protagonist, whose identity and motives are initially shrouded in mystery. Each chapter deepens the exploration of their psychological battles as they confront not only the crumbling world around them but also the grief for the parts of themselves they’ve lost along the way. At the heart of The Unfeeling is the sorrow that comes from maturing in a broken world, the pieces of personality that must be abandoned in order to survive, and the isolation that remains after emotions have been subdued. As the characters struggle to find meaning in a world where emotions have been eradicated, their journey becomes one of survival, identity, and the difficult choices that lead to an uncertain future. Inspiration: I had the idea of writing this book after reading a combo of Orwell, Kafka and the psychological “nonsense” from Beckett. This slow-burn narrative balances reflective, slice-of-life moments with intense action and character-driven growth. As the characters navigate their decaying reality, they confront not just external threats but also their internal struggles, grappling with the cost of survival in a world that demands personal compromises. The Unfeeling invites readers to reflect on the sacrifices we make as we adapt to societal pressures, and the emotional scars left behind as we shed pieces of who we once were. Updates: weekly, most likely on Sundays
