Smith, Keith Laumer, Poul Anderson.  Starships, grand battles, hand to hand and hand to forelimb combat! Victims are kidnapped and eaten, can you save them? Can you save them after they're eaten! Space fighters, deep space barbecue, disaster planning, last stands!Not to mention snarky dialogue and witty repartee (is that the same thing?)
