Long ago, when the world was young, elevated beings walked the earth and magic ruled over the lives of humans. The line between god and mage was blurred, undefined, and these beings did not place a high value on the lives of others, often using humans as sources of power or labor in service of their magic. After the Cataclysm, magic changed and much of the largest-scale powers were lost to time, death, and chaos. However, some ancient secrets remain. Jealously guarded, with the potential to utterly reshape the world as we know it, the secret knowledge is discussed only in the darkest chambers by only the highest of mages and scholars. But no secret remains hidden forever. Kel is a student at the Aelan Academy, preeminent hub for magical learning in all the world (despite what the Qur Keshi might tell you). She's talented, if a little prone to shortcuts, and she has a penchant for sticking her nose where it doesn't belong. Her curiosity and self-confidence are what got her here, but now in the traditional, hierarchical environment of the Academy they're starting to get her into trouble.
