Chapter 16 – Conjuring

The following months Emily started smithing better and better swords and armor. Iron was cheap from the dungeon and smelting it into steel was easy. She was also able to give the items lesser rune inscriptions which increased their value tenfold though runes on basic steel burnt out fast. Still it provided new adventures a cheap way to protect themselves for their first dives.

Emily was hammering away on another sword and found the repetitive movements almost hypnotic. She had found that she could hear the ring when then hammer meet the forming sword and knew it was the right strike, it was like a musical note and any strike that did not hit right produced a note that was jarring. Emily also found that she was able to know the correct temperature of the metal just by the color, her memory and enhanced eyes could detect even the slightest color deference, from orange to slightly more orange to orange with a slight red tint to it, all provided her enough information to know when to place the sword back into the forge or when to let the sword cool down.

As she finished her finial strike Emily grinned at the basic sword she had gotten good at crafting. Emily would add a sharping rune to it though a durable rune would work the steel swords would not last any longer. With a final hit Emily dropped the sword into a barrel of water and steam gusted out. Now it was time to sharpen the sword which took time and effort.

Using the grinding stone and foot petals to turn it Emily sharpened the sword into a nice edge. Now came the part Emily loved, creating runes.

Pushing magic into and though her hammer Emily stuck the sword slowly and methodically. She enjoyed watching the rune take shape, the lines of the runes made by magic. Slowly the rune took shape and Emily had to pace herself so she did not run out of mana. Emily's classes lowered mana consumption enough for her to inscribe runes but they were still Tier 1 classes.

Emily liked to forge but she did find it labor intensive and missed the manufacturing capabilities that she had on Earth. There she could just order any part made to her design specifications and machines would assemble if for her. Here on this new world if she wanted something like a piston she would need to forge a cylinder and ram then add a durability rune so the pressure would not burst the piston. This also meant there was limit to the psi pressure she could have the piston under. All kinds of new designs and weapons could be made if she could just find a way to forge it.

With a final strike the rune glowed and settled.

Lesser Steel Sword of Sharpness [ Intermediate, Highest, Highest ]

Not the greatest sword she had ever made but passable. Emily had found she could use her debugger and programming skills to correct runes and make them a half step away from the lowest common runes. This increased their value but Emily sold them cheaply since iron did not cost a lot and she still made a decent profit even with the 30% tax on items sold. Emily liked that she was helping fellow adventures and knew that this sword could save a life one day which meant more than money to her.

With another sword down Emily used a rag to wipe her face of the sweat that came with working near a scorching fire every day. Now it was time to start on her next scheduled project.

Emily walked to the back of the building and took a flight of stairs down to the basement. For months Emily keep to a rigorous schedule, first forging then working on her magic. Emily knew she could not receive a Tier 2 mage class but that did not stop her from wanting her mage skills to increase.

In the basement she saw the rough half melted pillars of metal she had made for target practice. Emily did not make them fancy or spend a lot of time on them they were basic iron pillars that had melted some form her magic.

"Source of all magic, heed my call!" Emily began. "Gather before me and strike down my enemies, Mana Bolt!"

A bolt of mana shot out of her cupped hand and slammed into one of the pillars. Ginning she shot the next iron pillars in line taking a break to regenerate her mana.

This practice slowly increased her skills in mana shaping, mana regulation, and incantations.

Slowly Emily skills inched up.

"Source of all magic, heed my call!" Emily muttered, trying to be quite.

"Gigii?"

"Gather before me and strike down my enemies, Mana Bolt!" Emily fired a mana bolt at one of the trio of goblins striking it in the head and killing it instantly.

"Gigii!" The goblins started to scream. Emily was able to fire off one more bolt before the last goblin reached her.

One of the swords she had made was in her hands and with a quick, practiced move, she stabbed the goblin in the neck. With a vicious twist Emily pulled the sword out of the dying goblin, it still took a few second for the goblin to fully bleed out.

Emily felt the level up.

After 10 months of hard and dedicated training and fighting in the dungeon and smithing she had reached the L 25 of Runic Blacksmith. She could now reach Tier 2 but she had another plan in mind.

Gathering the mana stone form on of the goblins Emily turned and headed out of the first level of the dungeon.

Emily made her way to the cooperative smithery. It had an expansive attic space that was unused and with a few blanks for walls and some noise canceling runes and cooling runes it made for a free place to stay.

Setting on an old chair that Emily had found there she took out an ascension stone form Shady her first bag of holding taken from the count.

Emily had thought long and hard about her classes and options and she was going to take another Tier 1 class.

Activating the stone she soon found herself in her old house. Emily looked around in fond nostalgia of place that had been becoming less and less her home. Shaking her head to clear it Emily made her way to her office and sat down in front of the computer.

Booting it up Emily waited till the class screen was displayed and saw numerous classes available. This time there were even more Tier 2 classes she could choose from and as she look at them Emily found the class she had debated on for months. With a sigh of resignation she selected her choice.

Again she found herself in a white room for a second then in a stone walled room. In front of her was a table with a book and another hour glass. Walking to the desk Emily read the embossed title.

“Mental Metal Conjuring.”

This was the class Emily chose to take. It was like her Mental Constructs skill but instead of conjuring objects in her mind the Mental Metal Conjuring class made real objects though there were several deterring factors. Unlike real conjures who could conjure permanent items this class could only conjure temporary items that used mana regeneration points to remain in the world.

There was an upside though, conjures relied heavily on their elementary affinity while this class it did not, it was also the reason conjuring classes were not more widely taken. Too conjure metal for instance you needed to have over 90% affinity otherwise the conjured metal would be severely degraded. Anything under 80% affinity and the metal would be almost useless with the amount of impurities that was conjured up. There were also classes that used illusion conjuring but that was more for assassins and rouges.

Emily quickly read through the book and found it was very similar to Mental Constructs skill, Emily thought that the skill was the very reason for the offered class.

As soon as she started reading the sand started to fall in the hour glass but she read fast and closed the book a few moments later. This seemed to signal the start of the test and a piece of metal was conjured in front of her.

Concentrating on the mental shape of the object Emily pushed mana though her mind and out in the world, it was a trick detailed in the book and she found it easy to do in practice. A new conjured piece of metal appeared beside the test example and looked and felt the same.

The test conjured metal disappeared and anther shape appeared this time slightly more complex. Emily easily copied the shape and conjured it.

More and more complex shapes appeared every time Emily successfully conjured the right copy. Emily had a feeling that if she did not copy the item in time she would fail the test. This was proven as the items appeared faster and faster. Only Emily’s quick mind was able to keep up as the objects became more and more intricate and detailed.

Emily lost herself in copying the new items that appeared and forgot the hourglass. When nothing new appeared she blinked in confusion and felt the world disappear.

Coming too Emily coughed and dunk some water trying to relieve the confusion and disorienting feeling of the abrupt test ending.
