Chapter 1 - New World

Beth came awake in agony finding herself lying in a disgusting ally smelling of feces and rotting garbage. She blinked and memories that were not her own assaulted her.

Emily Warden was a five-year-old girl who just lost her mother. Her mother Allana Warden had been a prostitute in a whorehouse Emily had grown up in. Last week two high level fire mages got into a disagreement and ended up burning the building down. They also manage to kill each other. Good riddance.

Emily had been trying to live on the streets without much education. Education was costly in the world so the majority of commoners were uneducated. Yes, this world. Beth had found herself reincarnated into another world. Not just any world one with stats..

Poor Emily had stolen a loaf of bread from a distracted merchant and run into the ally to savor her first decent meal in a week only to run headfirst into a gang of older children who did not hesitate to attack a poor defenseless girl. Emily had died alone, hungry, and desperate.

Now this body was hers.

‘Okay first I need to get some medical help’ the new Emily thought.

In this new world the healers were the church. They performed divine healing but for a price. Emily groaned as she picked herself up. Emily ribs were broken, her left arm too, and she was sure she had other broken or fractured bones she was unaware of. Spiting a glob of blood on the cobblestone street Emily slowing limped towards the bustling main street of merchant row.

Emily was in luck because there was a church not far away. Form the new memories Emily had she knew this was not the main church but a small branch in the capital city of the Hatfordian Empire.

Trying to hide her rough state Emily took a deep breath and straightened up. Walking she used all here training to dull the pain and weave unnoticed in the crowed. As much as she wanted to stare at verity of life swirling around her, form merchants hawking their ware, to people dressed in full suits of armor, to the medieval architecture, Emily set her sole focus toward getting to the church.

Finally arriving after what seemed like hours Emily entered the church of the sun.

“Praise the sun!” a priest was shouting. Moving towards anther priest who seemed to be just watching Emily was finally able to ask for help.

“Excuse me miss but I am in need healing.” Was all Emily managed to get out before darkness took her.

An indeterminate time later, Emily awoke in a small stone room with just bed she was currently on, a small table and a chair. Feeling her body, she realized she felt fine. Better then fine, Emily felt invigorated.

“That explains it.” Emily muttered to herself. Before she could pull up her complete status report the door opened, and the lady priest she had asked for help too, walked in.

“So you are awake, praise the sun! It took considerable effort to heal you.” The priest sat down and gave her a piecing look.

“Form your condition and attire I believe you do not have the means to repay the effort put into keeping you alive.” Pulling a scroll form her robed pocket, she also pulled out a small knife form her belt, and handed both to Emily.

“The Goddess Solaria understands some people do not have the means to repay their debt fully and need time to acquire the funds to pay for their treatment so the church has generously provided people like you a way to repay your debts.” That seemed enough of an explanation for the priest and she sat rigidly in her chair waiting for Emily’s response.

Emily forwent answering to unroll the scroll and started reading it.

“If you need me to read and explain the terms to you, I will be more than happy to go over the contract with you.”

Emily had already read the document and understood it readily enough.

“That will not be necessary. The document is straight forward and easily understood. It is a magically bonding contract in which I need to repay the church for services rendered the sum of 3 small gold coins. The church generously gives me 10 years to pay the total sum. If not paid in 10 years I will need to pay double the amount, a total of 6 small gold coins. For the next ten years a late fee of 1 small gold coin will be added every year to the total and I will also lose 2% of my heath and stamina per year. In ten years that loss will be a permanent 20% reduction to my heath and stamina and I will owe the church a total of 16 small gold coins. The church will then refuse any and all treatment or help going forward.”

You have learned the Basic Mathematics Skill.

The once calm and collected priest had a shocked look on her face.

“You understood all that at a glance?” She stammered.

Emily gave her a polite smile; she was used to shocking adults.

“Yes, as I said, this contract is easily understood and I well make every effort to repay you and the church for saving my life.” With that Emily used the dagger to prick her finger and press it onto the scroll. A bright flash of light and the contract was finalized. Rolling it back up Emily handed both the dagger and scroll to the priest, who never even introduced herself.

“Thank you for healing me and I will see myself out.” Not giving time for the priest to respond she climbed out of the hospital bed and left the room. It was easy to find her way out and soon Emily was back in the busy merchant street.

Needing time to understand her status screen and form a plan going forward, Emily ducked into a crowed inn. The main room was packed with people allowing Emily to find an out of the way corner to hide in.

Sinking into a chair Emily hoped to go unnoticed. Grabbing an empty tankard form a distracted dwarf who already had several empty ones around him and was busy working on another, Emily pretended to drink as she was finally able to pull up her stats

Emily’s eyes widen in surprise at the long list of skills and traits listed. The past Emily only had knowledge retention and fast learning traits which had been upgraded to prodigy and knowledge savant Emily assumed. Though she did wonder what the difference between knowledge savant and memory savant was.

This explained Emily’s high mana score. To check Emily pulled up the explanation on stats.

Emily nodded to herself. Her stamina would regenerate in 22 minutes, her mana would regenerate in just under 10 minutes, that assumed she was able to acquire a skill that used mana, and most stats helped increase other stats. Strength and Agility helped Endurance to increase her SP. Endurance helped Vitality to rise her HP. Both Intelligence and Willpower worked together to raise her MP. Every stat was important to Emily’s overall heath.

Now Emily just had to figure out what to do. Her father taught her the fundamental survival skills, water, shelter, and then food.

People can survival a long time without food but would die in just days without water. Shelter was needed to protect yourself from the elements and animals and provide a self place to sleep. Emily could easily get water from wells in the city, food could be stolen like the past Emily proved, she just had not been strong or fast enough to keep the food, which just left shelter.

Emily was distracted by the dwarf she had stolen the tankard form as he light a cigar. Focusing on the device in his hand she saw it was covered with symbols. Suddenly Emily was peering into the device and seeing lines of symbols. Emily did not understand the writing but received a vague impression of fire, heat, flames height, and how hot the flames should burn.

Blinking Emily shook her head to clear it.

‘That most be the programming trait at work’ Emily decided.

A memory surfaced from past Emily’s memories, which were not as clear as her current memories. It was a memory of a recent overheard conversion at the brothel past Emily’s mom had worked at, apparently this story was still talked about even through it had occurred several years ago.

A count and anther count were bitter rivals always trying to destroy the other. This went on for years until Count Swift’s main head knight became a traitor and killed Swift’s wife and two of his children in an assassination attempt on Count Swift’s life. What shocked everyone to this day were guards and especially head knights signed a magically binding contract that should have prevented the Knight form harming his charge. There were only three ways to end a contract, one, complete the contract, second, destroy the contract scroll completely, and third, have a high level specially skilled person annul the contract.

It was later found out his rival had paid an enormous sum to a corrupt judge to have the knight’s contract annulled. Only the judges in the Emperor’s high court had such skills, farther shocking everyone as they were appointed directly by the Emperor and were watched extremely closely, for magically binding contracts were the foundation of trade and society. All this come out when Swift publicly called for an honor dual in front of the Emperor and most of the nobles in the land.

What sparked this memory was what happened after. Distrusting of any guards or knights Count Swift went about replacing everyone with enchanted golems. There were plenty of talk about the true effectiveness of such security for golems were usually backed by knights and guards.

Emily wondered if her newfound skill would work on enchanted golems. Another consideration was that in the Hatfordian Empire nobles were required to gather at the capital every two years. Almost all nobles had their own lands to administer and so only chose to journey to the capital when required. Past Emily know this well because every brothel would be crowded as nobles brought their entire court and hangerons with them to the capital. The last gathering had only been a few months ago so Swift should have left the city. If Emily could use her skill to reprogram the golems she would have a very safe place to make farther plans and have almost two years of safety, if the count did not return unexpectedly.

Emily finally had a plan and a way forward in this new world, without farther hesitation she got up and made her way out of the inn.
