He's been assigned to speak with the dead villain in order to glean more information about his mysterious motives as well as how he came across his deadly magic, but all he does is insist that Kalvin would've walked the same path he had in his shoes. And when the villain brings him back in time and Kalvin awakens in his infant body, he must spend the next forty years proving him wrong.
