Synopsis
Kenny was out to prove a thing or two; that even while missing half a hand and his left eye, he could still snap spines and stomp in teeth—just like Chesty would want him to do. But once the Veil Riders cemented their foothold in Alberdand, his company commander had other plans for him: deep recon and spy work.
Gone were his options to pull a trigger and slay bodies; no, he was sent off to the far reaches of the Veil and away from the front lines to a town known as The Last Tower, where he had to observe and report on the nonexistent enemy.
At least the Valley Elf Koko let him recruit was easy on the eyes.
Verri was once charged with performing spycraft for the Wilmit-Nung Nobility, but once the Humans appeared, they recalled her and sent her to spy on the newcomers. She did as she was told, signed up for their army, and was hopeful for this new assignment.
Instead of gaining a slot in the intelligence Corps like Verri wanted, she tried not to die of boredom after being lumped in with a mortar battery on the outskirts of Tallwheat. She tried to do her job and report on the Humans, But there were only a handful she could see, which was in fleeting glances.
Verri was about to give up on spying for the Wilmet-Nung Nobility and just call this attempt a complete loss. That was until that Human Marine came around the mortar batteries looking for a volunteer for a mission.
She jumped at the chance that this would allow her to observe a human closely and get her away from these stupid mortars.
Too bad this Human seemed intent on trying to shoot everything and stab anyone who so much as looked at him wrong. Either that or stare at her ass.
This pair of unlikely allies now have to put their best foot forward to put the kibosh on the Southern elves' plans to unearth a weapon from a bygone era and manage not to slit one another's throats along the way.
