The story follows Harris, a thirty something with low expectations and a great dog, as he and his friends navigate the challenges of awakening to a new world where magic is science, elves are real and fantastic adventures await around every corner. In this new world and the Unified System that governs it the only true human limitations are one's own drive and will to advance. A dream for many, this new world quickly becomes a nightmare for Harris because of his lack of drive, limited social skills and a crippling distrust of centralized authority. Harris refuses to interact with the Unified System and, like any good friend, abandons his friends and the collaborative tutorial provided for the newly awakened to move into an abandoned bookstore to learn the game through odd jobs and odder encounters with the inhabitants of his new world. As Harris progresses through his epic journey across time, space, death and reality he is aided by superior strategy, tactical prowess, guile, entrepreneurial spirit, but primarily luck, as he reshapes his new world and protects his old friends on the way to the pinnacle.
