Chapter Five

Wang Lee’s POV

Under my Lord’s command, I had to assess the kids' combat skills and was placed as an exam proctor. I knew it was going to be a tiresome job, but at the same time, I was looking for a disciple to pass my teachings and legacy onward, so it was killing two birds with one stone.

I was already late because I had to oversee an execution before I could leave the palace. After the execution was finally over, I quickly teleported to the classroom. I glanced at everybody's profiles last night to familiarize myself with the students, and from the get-go, two people stood out.

The class president was at the top of the school, and I was going to choose her to be my disciple. The other that stood out was at the bottom of not just his class but the entire school—Ren.

I introduced myself as the Demon King’s retainer and told them I would execute the students who failed this test, making it seem like it was on a whim, but it was under the Lord’s command.

As I was introducing myself, a kid was giving off an abnormal aura. I scanned the classroom to see who it was. As I was wondering how a powerless brat was giving off such an unusually strong aura, it grew stronger with each passing second, causing even me to feel uncomfortable to the point of almost making me pass out.

We reached the training grounds soon after I arrived, and as the robot announced the rules of the test, I gazed at the students with a tinge of sadness. These pitiful fools don’t know what’s coming after leaving this so-called school.

After almost everyone had gone, only the defective bastard was left. He met my eyes with his, his eyes lifeless, he had given up. Even if he didn't, I still had hope for this bastard. If he could give off such an aura that could make me pass out, then he could surely pass this test.

With only one attempt left, he looked utterly defeated and spent. With each attempt, the other students' grins only grew bigger, and they seemed happier with each passing second.

He lined up with a determined look plastered on his face.

'Guess the bastard didn't give up yet.'

This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings.

He attempted it again and became a golden blur.

'Golden?'

I could barely keep up with his movements. which took me by shock since even the president’s Den-Sai had been clear as day to me.

I glanced at the screen, and the number displayed there was ridiculous—a score beyond a perfect one.

'Guess he had it in him after all.'

I looked back at him to see him pass out, catching him before he could fall.

I dismissed everybody and took Ren to the castle to let the healers deal with him.

I walked into my Lord’s chamber without knocking and reported to him what had transpired during the test. Curious, my Lord had followed me to examine the boy’s body.

He carefully examined the body and the strange marks engraved on him. Almost as if he was studying them, he asked, “Who is this boy?”

“He is a student of the academy named Ren Kage, my Lord.”

After observing Ren's mysterious lines engraved in his body some more, my lord spoke again, “Hmm… I think it’s time to ask for a long-owed favor from the heavens. This boy needs an angel to teach him magic that doesn’t originate from this realm. In the meantime, I want you personally to train him.”

‘Favor from the heavens? Just who is this boy for the Demon Lord to ask for a favor?’

“Yes, my Lord. I was planning to take him under my wing even if you had not commanded me to do so.”

My Lord nodded thoughtfully, his eyes fixed on Ren's unconscious form. "Very well, Wang Lee. See to it that he receives the best care and training. He may prove to be a valuable asset in the times to come."

With a bow, I acknowledged my Lord's command. "Understood, my Lord. I will ensure Ren receives both."

As I turned to leave, my Lord's voice stopped me. "And Wang Lee, keep a close watch on him. There is more to this boy than meets the eye."

I nodded again, inwardly pondering the mysterious aura that Ren had exhibited during the test. It was clear that my Lord sensed something significant about him, something that even I had yet to fully grasp.

Ren still hadn’t awoken yet, though it had been almost a week since he passed out. According to the royal physician, he should awake anytime soon. The room was quiet, the only sound the steady rhythm of Ren’s breathing. His usually vibrant face was pale, a stark contrast to his usual lively demeanor. The curtains were drawn, allowing only a sliver of daylight to pierce the dim room.

Each day that passed, I was losing hope that this boy would ever awaken. Just as I was about to leave the room, from the corner of my eye, I saw Ren’s finger twitch.

His eyelids fluttered, and slowly, they opened. Confusion clouded his gaze for a moment before recognition settled in. “Huh… Ms. Lee? Where am I?”

“Ren, you’re awake. That’s good. As for where you are, you’re in the Demon Palace.”

“The Demon Palace?! What am I doing at the Demon Palace?”

His tone went up many decibels, which I didn’t know was possible. If I hadn’t seen the sound coming from Ren’s mouth, I wouldn’t have questioned it if someone said it was a little girl squealing.

“Shut up and listen, boy!”

I caught him up to speed on what his next couple of years would look like, including him being taken under my wing and his new teacher flying from the angel realm.

All of this took him by surprise. It was probably too much information for the poor boy who was last in the entire school. “Ren, take some time to contemplate everything and recuperate. I shall send a servant to show you to your new room. Your training under me will start at the beginning of next week.”

After saying what had to be said, I left his room, closing the door quietly behind me. The journey ahead was daunting and long, but I felt that if anyone could succeed in this long and arduous journey, it would be Ren.
