Synopsis
I'm sure you read or watch, or at the very least, heard of stories before that sets in an alternate Earth where magic and myths exist. Often, those stories are set in America, or perhaps Japan, maybe even Korea. It's common to see those stories take place in popular countries, is what I'm saying. But, have you ever heard of such a story taking place in a little country called Malaysia?
This is an episodic story about a young elf, Emil, and their caretaker, Ezra, running an old and peculiar shop called The Flower of Dreams/梦想的花园, located in Penang, Malaysia. Everything does not change when Akane, a Magic Item Appraiser sent from the Ministry of Magic and Metaphysics, visits the shop to investigate the old and mysterious magic items slumbering beneath the shop, waiting to be awakened because they don't meet the current international magic item standards.
Follow the residents of the shop on their journey to live a normal life while encountering relatively interesting individuals and situations as they welcome customers who buy magic items to fulfill their desires, such as a cup that will never let the liquid inside go cold, as well as exorcism clients who wish to get rid of their problems, like noisy ghosts, annoying spirits, mischievous magic creatures and many more. Watch them as the characters show you many ordinary aspects of such magical society and see their struggle with waking up when the alarm goes off, thinking about what to eat for breakfast, and-- okay, okay, laughing hard, I can't keep this up. This parody is so cheesy.
It's a slice-of-life story about our main characters living in a world that develops similarly to ours with fantastical elements in full display, reminiscent of Ghibli movies such as Kiki's Delivery Service or Pom Poko in terms of style and tone. If you like anime such as Flying Witch and The Ancient Magus Bride, then this story might interest you. This story not only explores many themes on a personal level, such as friendship, family, racism, discrimination, LGBT, self-identity, etc, it also invites you to see the cultures, societies, as well as myths that exist within Malaysia in this magic-laced alternate Earth.
So, what are you waiting for? Hop in and enjoy this relaxing ride into this world of wonder~
p/s The cover art is not an accurate portrayal of the shop.
