Once gods were considered real. Civilizations developed around them and included the concepts of human sacrifice and the gods who once lived amongst us were both worshipped and feared. But all of those stories and myths were never forgotten, some ancient tales had to be locked away for the safety of humanity. Our job was to capture, contain and limit the spread of the old tales before the general public became aware of them and belief spread. Humans have short memories for a good reason. The gods aren’t real. They never were. I should know. I was there when they were scattered to the winds.
