"I almost had him. I almost had him. There we were, the asteroid moments away from crashing down into the planet, and he stood in front of me, his godsdamned sword in my chest. And I almost had him. But then... I was here. This stupid floating rock in this stupid endless void—"
"The End Lands." Purity raised her finger as she interjected. How I longed to cut it off.
"And I have no way of getting back. No way of finishing what he started. How am I supposed to live with the fact that he just... wins? He just wins."
"Maybe this is the multiverse's way of giving you a break," Luna said, her feet dangling on either side of my head. "I mean, that's my justification. We all came from pretty shitty places in our past lives. I've been much happier here. We all have."
She really shouldn't speak so definitively. Aside from her, this place has been a nightmare. Not to mention the actual nightmares. I can't help but feel this little paradise they've constructed for themselves is ending. There's something else lurking out there between the boundaries of the universes, and whatever it is, even I'm not powerful enough to stop it should it come our way.
