Synopsis
In a dark cell, chained, sat a broken man. Footsteps thumped down the hastily built hallway leading to his lonely cell. Heavy footsteps bore the burden of the man who had killed his father, the king. A flickering light finally bounced energetically against the far wall beyond the cell bars its energy contrasting that of the defeated chained soldier. The kingslayer emerged with a torch and a bowl. He placed the pitch-covered stick in a holder on the wall opposite the candle.
He fished for his key and slid it into the padlock on the iron gate that stood between him and the beast he had created.
"How did it come to this?" Said the man, gripping one of the cell bars with one hand. The man chained to the wall did not respond. He hung his head and his gaze stared into space. The cell door swung open with a shrieking whine and the bowl made a soft click as it was placed on the ground. The betrayer pushed it into the cell with his foot.
The man looked to the crouched figure, the general. "Soon, we will be at the very gates and all made possible because of you." He closed the cell and locked it. “My father was worried about the dwarves. He was afraid that you had lost your bite. That the army was tired and homesick.”
He turned and grabbed the torch from its holder. He sighed. "I know he was like a brother to you. I know you would have - did - go to hell and back for him, but he wasn't the man you grew up with."
“We could have conquered it all. You could have served me like you served him.”
The generals head raised slightly. “You knew what would happen when you killed him,” The chained man’s voice rattled and scratched from a dry throat. “You knew how I would feel.” Anger creeped into the unsettling mixture in his voice.
“You’re right. I knew what you would do the day the King died. I just wish -”
The chained man laughed at the remorse he heard. “The day you killed him!” The chained general accused him venomously.
The betrayer continued ignoring the accusation. “I wish you could know what I know, see what I have seen.”
“You should kill me while you still have the chance!” The chained man bellowed. His captor turned away and his shoulders drooped as he turned back to the stairs, his footsteps heavier than when they came.
