“Good morning Zach.” Avner said as Zach walked up to him.
“Morning. Is the leg holding up?” Zach said.
“It is doing very well, I have something for you.” Avner said to Zach.
Avner opened his satchel and pulled a notebook out. “This notebook is full of the history of the Connection and tips on how to use your ability in new ways. I have lived a long life and have picked up a few techniques that are in this notebook.” Avner said handing it to Zach.
“I-I don’t know what to say.” Zach said.
“You don’t need to say anything. All I ask of you is to stay safe.” Avner said, wrapping Zach in a big hug.
Zach spent some time with Avner while doing his rounds. By the time the two got to Zach’s home it was noon.
“Avner I am going to miss you. I hope I will be able to see you again soon.” Zach said.
“I’m sure it will be a lot sooner than you think.” Avner said with a smirk.
Before Zach could ask what he ment, there was a flash of light and a sound like a thunderclap. An explosion had seared several homes on the next block. Without thinking Zach ran toward the devastation. Twelve homes were gone and another 7 were on fire. People were running around, trying to get away from the fires. Zach grabbed a passing girl. “What the hell happened here?” Zach said.
“I-I d-don’t know. This happened so quickly.” The girl said.
Letting go of the girl Zach ran to a man lying on the ground. He had what looked like third degree burns all over his body. Kneeling down, Zach felt for a pulse. The man was dead. Pulling away from the body Zach grabbed a man that was running by. “I need your help.” Zach told him.

Zach ran to the next casualty with the man in tow. The woman had second degree burns and one of her legs was bent at an awkward angle. “Ma’am your lag has a compound fracture I need to set it before any more damage is caused.” Zach said. “I need your belt, keys, and your phone sir.” Zach said to the guy he had come with him. The guy obliged and Zach pulled his own belt from the loops. Folding his belt up he gave it to the woman and told her to bite down on it. Not stopping to see if she did what he told her to do, Zach wrapped the man’s belt around her upper leg. Cinching the belt tight Zach grabbed a short piece of broken rebar laying close by and slid under the belt, “Sir I need you to twist this rebar as hard as you can.” Zach said to the man. The guy did so and Zach gently picked the leg up, Ma’am this is going to hurt a lot” and with that Zach pulled her leg with a mighty heave. The woman screamed. With the bone set, Zach grabbed the phone from where he had set it down. He opened the back of it and sighed in relief. He pulled the lithium battery out of the phone and put it on the ground, grabbing the glasses he swiftly snapped one of the temples off the glasses. Holding the sharp metal Zach quickly stabbed the battery. Instantly the battery started to spew fire out of the hole Zach just made. He then held the temple over the hot flame until it was red hot. Before the metal could cool down he drove it into the wound, effectively cauterizing the wound. Zach told the guy to stay with the woman and make sure she does not close her eyes. Grabbing the guy’s belt Zach ran to help the next casualty. He was able to help two more people and determined that three other people had died before Conner, Avner, and the emergency care came. Zach was exhausted and was covered in dirt and blood. He sat down on a small hill overlooking the devastation, with his head in his hands. After Conner had given a statement to the authorities he sat down next to Zach.
“I don’t know why someone would do such a thing.” Zach said to Conner.
“How do you know that it wasn't an accident? It could have been a gas main blowing or a propane canister that got too hot.” Conner said.
“Neither of those would make a big enough explosion that I saw. It had to be a very powerful explosive device. Most likely C-4 or acetone peroxide. Either way, same result.” Zach said.
“How the hell do you know that and I don’t? They should be teaching this in the Academy.” Conner said
Zach gave a small huff of lafter. After some time Conner wrapped his arm around Zach’s shoulder and they stayed like that until it got dark.
