Synopsis
'The Bandaged Man' is the on-going second entry in my urban-horror anthology book, oriented around malignant cosmic deities, nightmarish cityscapes, mental delusions, enigmatic corporations, and ancient folklore. It will have interconnected lore, which will be bolstered by cryptic poems. The book's current working title is, rather uncreatively, 'The City Of The Dark', and it will follow four similar, but different characters as they navigate this city, and at once lose themselves, and rediscover who they really are. Context will be sparse and cryptic, doled out drip by drip as each entry is released.'The Bandaged Man' follows a first person narrator as he is tormented by a hideous encounter with an incomprehensibly hideous, seemingly un-human man covered in bandages whilst he struggles to look after his sick, paralysed wife. The city grows increasingly humid, and sickness spreads. The population dwindles yet the production of cryptic, eerie media grows and grows, from subliminal advertising, to snuff-films, to unsettlingly personal anonymous calls. Our narrator works for a video-production company, having to 'edit' and 'approve' many of the disturbing films he receives. As he does this, he grows increasingly delirious as visions and nightmares of the Bandaged Man lay waste to his psyche. Soon, he sees his body in the mirror begin to morph and mutate and acquire ghastly wounds and defects, and worm-like creatures writhing underneath his pale skin. Naturally, he grows insane, and begins covering himself in bandages... NOTE: This is a story that covers a lot of sensitive personal topics, such as body dysmorphia, bulimia, and self-harm. It is also fundamentally about body horror. This will not be story for the faint of heart, it will explore psychological issues that are very close to home for me. This story is far from finished, currently i have only completed a first draft of the first chapter. Nevertheless, all feedback is welcome and very much wanted.
