The Balrog, a fire elemental who is often mistaken for a demon, has his home rudely attacked under the mountain. After a highly unpleasant encounter with a wizard, Hannibal awakens on the mountainside and doesn't know how much time has passed. He attempts to journey home but goes on a multi-year adventure of his own, and ends up in the aging and petty mind of young Jane Bennett.
