John made it rich when he was younger and bought a book store in a large adventuring city. He's got enough money to live in comfort for the rest of his very long life so in exchange for books he merely asks for an interesting story. People of all walks of life come in and tell John all about the most interesting things they've done, and John gives them the books they want.
