In an oppressive dystopian society, Rea struggles to make ends meet as she cares for her dying mother during the day and works at a bakery by night. Her people, the Low Borns of the Society, have been forced to live in poverty after the resistance 50 years ago failed to overthrow the High Borns who rule them. With seemingly so few options and nowhere left to go, Rea decides to enroll in an underground school of magic so that she can gain the knowledge needed to save her mother and develop the skills necessary to take down the High Born society. Along the way, Rea will be aided by unexpected friends, hone an art of magic that is forbidden to her people, and learn hard truths about herself that she wishes were different.
