Synopsis

Readers can expect:  Post-apocalyptic violence, “soft”magic systems akin but not quite the same as cultivation, a very strange sort of pyschic vampire, and an overall grimly depressing tone. Lots and lots of violence, directed everywhere and at everyone, including women and children. Posisbly some torture, if I have the stomach to write the scenes percolating in my brain.  Oh, and certain god-like beings that may or may not formerly be human and/or may or may not be responsible for the whole mess are going to be lurking in there somewhere. This story is about: A man who very much wants to die, but finds he cannot. A deal is struck that potentially provides him the exit he craves.  So off he goes on a journey into the savage heart of a radically changed United States. Suicide Dan and the End it All Plan is explictly written for the November/December 2024 Write-a-Thon. The goal is to tell a complete story in the requisite 55,000 words, plus a small cushion. However, I’m guessing there’s going to be some loose ends. See below for the sprawling setting I have halfway created. Daniel Mancini wants to die. Unfortunately for Daniel, his all too successful suicide attempt happened at the exact moment everything on Earth changed, with two-thirds of humanity disappearing, the laws of physics changing, techhology functioning erratically, and strange powers cropping up among the  fortunate (or unfortunate?). None of which holds the slightest interest to Daniel. He died, but he came back, infused with some very strange abilities. And when he killed himself again, he came back yet again. And again. Daniel can't die. But, oh, how he wants to. He needs a plan. A plan that will work. I have (or had) a very vague outline for a vast story that involves our Earth split three ways, with one third of humanity allocated to each version of Earth. A fourth and radically different world from our own is pulled into the catastropher to form a tetrad that I’m calling, for lack of a better term,  the World Split. • On one split world most of the populace has the ability to gain powers by meditation and a sort of cultivation• Another split world is a traditional dungeon crawler, with towers that eat people (hat tip to Peter Gabriel) and those usual shenanigans• Finally, the third world would be one where monsters predominate (To this point this is the one I’ve given the least thought to. Candidly I’m not a huge monster hunter genre fan.)• And the Fourth world, not the result of an Earth split? There’s a sort of human consuming mist the civilization is continually fighting against This work or series would theoretically run to millions of words and somewhere between ten and fifteen volumes. This much shorter work is set in that admittedly largely undeveloped timeline, on the first world listed. I suspect the rest of the stories will never be written, but one never knows. But if anyone wishes to think of this as World Split Zero: The Prequel, I have no objections. I’m basically going to be writing and releasing as though I’m cooking flap jacks, at least through November 30, so come and get ‘em. I had a week of use it or lose it vacation and no money to go anywhere. So here I am.  I am a sucker for a good quotation, so many if not most chapters are going to to start with one. There’s also going to be “quotes” from a source entirely of my own creation.
