That is the Mirror Trial, a chance to be granted a wish, to earn abilities beyond human comparison, to serve the Emperor and his eternal rule.  Helena is Chosen, someone blessed to see her heart's desire in mirrors and uniquely suited to participating in the Mirror Trial. An unfortunate accident that took her parents' lives and disabled her leg ended her dream of running the Fractures. Now, she scrambles to support her family of six with her sewing. Only her older sister's holy position as a survivor of the Trials keeps their family from plunging into poverty. Then her sister is assassinated.  For her family to survive, Helena sees only one option: Sneak through the Mirror into the Fractures and find the Emperor to beg for her sister's resurrection.
