Main_sys - The main operating system and most powerful artificial intelligence on board. Equivalent to the Executive officer/First mate of a ship. It oversees all current operations tasked by the captain but is inherently limited in its ability to independently command other systems for safety. CH5 PG265

Repair_sys - Equivalent to a ship's Chief Engineer/Surgeon tasked with major ship repairs and general maintenance. CH5 PG412

Manufacturing_sys - No real equivalent to navel rank, but its purpose is a primary function of a VNP and is to be preserved due to its essential role of turning raw elements into usable refined materials. CH5 PG674

Comm_sys - Equivalent to a communication officer, processes transmitted information and translations are necessary units of measure. CH5 PG1085

Security_sys - A USM-VNP has no physical weapons standard but a robust digital defense network for cybersecurity and the interception of corrupted software or potential viruses. The designers of the USM-VNP arguably over-engineered this system, giving a large amount of Mainframe power to its operations. The closest equivalent is like an immune system or Military police. Thinking_Machine - An extremely powerful artificial intelligence, even more so than a VPN's main_sys. It is capable of generating unique theories about any anomalies that are encountered; it is also capable of generating new designs for various machines if need be. The term "Thinking Machine" was just a placeholder, but it stuck in the long term. This system has a separate mainframe that needs to be constructed within a star's orbit to facilitate the gargantuan power requirement. CH5 PG1890

Subsystems—Various subsystems throughout a standard USM-VNP have localized subframes to operate autonomously for various ship processes, such as reactors, engines, comm-satellites, probes, etc. The closest equivalent is standard crewmen or Commisend officers. CH5 PG2890
