Vera, after a year in the high cost of living city of Graezhold, is struggling with making payments to the demonic loan shark she initially borrowed money from. Pushed to a financial and emotional breaking point, Vera is forced out of the civil life she'd been pursuing, an ancestral magic previously dormant making her the focus of the loan shark with a claim on her soul. However, the same magic that makes her such an important target also gives Vera a new path forward. The Adventuring Corps is always in need of capable people for helping domesticate the many lands that surround Graezhold, and Vera's new demonic powers place her within that demographic, albeit barely. She'll have to train, earn a living, and simply survive the perils of being an adventurer, all while avoiding the attention of the man who holds a contract for her soul.
