The money that they left Nathan was just enough for him to survive until he was allowed to take up their work in the rice fields. Nathan suffered from a condition where he was constantly in pain and couldn’t shape his soul to house a spren and gain an Ability. He was shunned because of his condition to the point where after his parents died, his only connection was to his uncle Heth. When Nathan collapsed in the fields and was taken to a hospital for several days, raking up an unpayable bill, Nathan thought that his life had hit rock bottom. When Nathan was taken by a trans-universal being that called itself ‘Knowledge’ and forced him to participate in a proof of concept experiment where the only way out is to die or to reach the end of an unconquerable gauntlet, he was proven wrong.  The only upside is that maybe his condition wasn’t just a burden after all…
