The world is controlled by numen—god-like beings that demand sacrifices from the humans they rule to gain power. In exchange they bestow humans supernatural might and prestige they could have never gained otherwise. Segren, son of such a high priest of a numen, is racked with guilt upon the human sacrifices made to his country’s numen. His defiance of his religion and royal lineage leave him an outcast in this world.
