*BOOM* an explosion on the beaches of Normandy. Another 5 lives sent to the afterlife. The reapers scrambled about on the beaches, hopelessly attempting to keep control over the number of dead as the battle raged and more soldiers marched to their deaths. And through it all, He watched. He was the impartial observer, the unbiased historian no one knew about. And He watched as the greatest empires of this world crumbled, fell and died, their deaths leaving a heavy weight on the land that would not be forgotten. He watched as human killed human in a war that had been in the making for 30 years. He watched a man justify the death of an entire group of people for having the same religion as those he blamed for his country’s fall. He watched as humanity tore itself apart over internal greed and dreams of great power. And through it all, He saw humanity. He saw people with no true care for why the war started go to war in defense of their people. He watched the greatest cruelties, the most heinous of crimes, and He watched the greatest kindnesses, the most virtuous of actions. He saw a group with internal loyalties, a system of descending and cascading loyalty. He watched armies mobilize for the sake of vengeance for country men they would never know, and had never seen. He watched as young men left home to serve their country, knowing they may not make it back alive. He watched as those young men left their homes and went across the world to a distant land to fight a war against a powerful force, hoping to avenge fallen comrades and friends whom they had never had the chance to meet, and never would meet. He saw rooms of caskets. He saw grieving soldiers. He saw widows and broken families. He saw the maimed and crippled. He saw the soldiers whose minds had broken. He saw blasted hellscapes where people once lived, children once laughed. He saw unmarked mass graves. He saw the ruins of a once great city, fallen to greed and infighting. He saw the war stretch its roots into the opposite side of the world. He watched as humans sacrificed their life for what they believed in. He saw the great bombs as they were built. He saw them be used. He watched as, for a brief moment, a star was born in a city, before it fell in on itself to destroy the city. He watched as doctors attempted to heal those still living. He saw it end. He saw soldiers be turned into veterans. He watched the human world pick itself back up. He saw loyalty and morality. He saw ambition and greed. He saw emotion and care for the fellow man. He saw cruelty and a disregard for others. He saw hard choices and tough times. He saw good and evil in equal amounts. And through it all, He saw the nature of humanity. Loyalty. For those they cared for, humans would go to great lengths to help them. Whether that is family and friends, a child half a world away being killed for no true reason, a young person who died in a harbor, or a person who gave their life for their country. For the peoples and principles they are loyal to, humans will do quite a few things you might not expect from them.
