Synopsis
Purpose; a dark fantasy webserial written by Kaysin, starting in late 2023. Updates come every Monday and Thursday, with bonus character chapters for milestones.
Charlotte Haskell's always been a survivor, yet after an unfortunately timed date turns into the apocalypse, she's thrust in a world of fantasy where Dragon's and Demon's aren't just magical, they're true monsters. Left to survive in this new world of Magic, Charlotte has to find her family, protect those around her, stumble through the steps into adulthood, and survive the onslaught from another world, all while learning about her new powers, and combating the demonic forces that threaten to destroy mankind.
Purpose; isn't for the faint of heart, and touches on dark theme's and death more than your average serial. Characters die, people are various shades of greyed out morality, and the world is brutal and unrelenting. The main character does not always make the right decision, and sometimes makes disagreeable ones, and while is the focus point we follow, isn't a chosen one, or the center of the world by any means at the start of her journey. If you can't handle acts of extreme violence, suffering, depressing overtones, and constant dire circumstances, then Purpose; may not be for you. That said, I do my best not to veer off into torture porn - the world is unrelenting, but there's hope, and that's one of the few things that guide the characters.
I started writing Purpose; as a need for well, Purpose, hence the name, inspired by Dazai Osamu's "No Longer Human", in which the character's goal in life is stated to be "Nothing". I don't work full time, and spend most of my year indoors, watching after my mother who can no longer work. My hopes is to one day make it as an author of some renown, and support her by giving her, and the people around me, the life they deserve to lead. Donations, by proxy, are greatly appreciated, as I want to give her the world before she gets too old to see it. I wear my inspirations on my sleeves, and she's one of them; but also the authors that have genuinely changed my life. Wildbow, known for his holy trinity of Worm, Pact and Twig, along with authors such a Hazel Young known for their series Katalepsis, the more recent Anemone and their wonderful stories Nowhere Stars, and of course the goat, Domagoi Krurmaic and his amazing work, Mother of Learning. Each have influenced me in some tiny way, and if you see similarities between the stories, know that they're inspired from a place of profound respect and admiration.
I typically write at a pace of 5k words a day on good days, or 2-3k on bad days, and I maintain a small backlog, especially well into the first and second arcs. I intend to write Purpose; for a long time coming, so please bare with me on this ride as I grow as an author.
