Day 17
It's been a little over four days since I left home. According to [Terrain Sense] I've made quite a lot of progress. The skill is still at a low level, so I can't tell how far, but I know I'm several miles away, over ten at least. but probably around a hundred or so. I'm not sure, I don't have any bases to go off of after all.
The last few days haven't been eventful, I've passed through several different biomes, though they were all variations of forests. Except for that one rocky hill part, that was a pain to clamber over. My messages sum it up.

< you have leveled up! LV22 -> Lv23 | +1 SkP +3 StP>
I leveled a lot of skills, mostly without trying, though I have been using [Power Shot] and [Dash] whenever I can. It seems most of my skills get more xp when used in combat, except for skills like meditation, obviously. A little hunting, a lot of running, plenty of target practice. I mostly hunted small game for food, which actually didn't give me any XP at all. According to the status, it's because they are so far beneath me. Whatever that means.
All the other stuff I hunted was honestly by accident. I stumbled upon the Mountain monkey, I was just going to pass by but it immediately threw a slab of rock at me. The monkey was actually huge, and built like a brick house. It had slabs of rock chained to its limbs like armor, and it seemed to just conjure rocks out of nowhere.
I didn't see it do actual magic, I just had no idea where it was getting all the rocks it kept tossing at me. Overall, pretty easy fight. I just shot it with like fifty poisoned arrows until it keeled over. It knocked over like five trees though.
The sand traps were just pools of living quicksand. I didn't even know it was a monster as my foot sunk into it, until I felt teeth scraping at my skin. That was scary. I promptly freaked out and started stabbing the walls until I found purchase on a weird lump. I stabbed that repeatedly until the sand stopped moving, and became gray like dead coral. I then went around to the other three pits, less for the xp and more out of spite for scaring me so bad.
I wasn't too sad about the lack of magic from the monkey, as I saw some real magic from my next encounter, the ‘surrogate seer’. This bad boy was proper spooky. It looked humanoid, but made of mist, about seven feet tall with white glowing eyes. Its whole body was see through, and its shape seemed to unravel at the hands and feet.
The Seer was stalking me as I went through the forest, making illusions and whispering to me throughout the journey. I was content to leave it alone and ignore it, until it's illusions started messing with my path, blocking trails and creating false pathways. I became fed up with its antics, and used [Tracing] to find its real body.
Only now do I realize it was leading me somewhere.
I came across a gnarled tree with what seemed to be a massive human heart stuffed into it. The heart was bleeding, and pulsating. Rivers of blood flowed out of its distended arteries. A ring of the false seers suddenly entered my vision, from their posture they seemed to be mocking me. I was immensely disturbed.
I fought through my fear, and rushed forward to stab the heart. The seers moaned in pain, before distorting into tentacles of mist. Unexpectedly, it had substance. The white lashes tore at my body, the screams were drowned out as the heart was torn asunder. I was covered head to toe in black blood before I realized the fog had receded, and the sounds had stopped.
I went to bed that night high in the treetops. My sleep disturbed by boundless nightmares. I hate that thing.
The fortress amphibian seemed to be an evolved form of the bulwark amphibian I fought like two weeks ago. It was huge, and even more heavily fortified. It had spears protruding from its castle-like exterior. And its tongue resembled a mace, with spikes that seemed to be poisoned. It was much stronger than the last frog, but just as stationary. I eventually won after a long drawn out fight by ripping up the armor that shielded its eyes, before I stabbed it with my heavily poisoned master arrows. Due to it not moving around that much, its meat was tender, but also a bit salty.
After that, was my most boring and time consuming challenge; the Ravine. Yep, big ass tear in the ground, I had to saw at one of the huge trees near the gap for like a solid twelve hours to get across. I just knocked it over once it was loose enough, and walked over it. And this ravine wasn't one of those weak ravines, nah, this one was actually bottomless. No convenient river at the bottom, just complete shadow like a thousand feet down.
I made sure to pile a few rocks at the base to make sure it wouldn't roll or anything, but I still sprinted over the darn thing, falling is a huge fear of mine. Concerning its size, it was hundreds of miles long. I saw the end, but it was a long ways away. About 200 or so feet wide? It thinned out to the sides, so I made my bridge there. But still, shout out to the tree for being such a team player, your sacrifice will not be forgotten.

I've found traces of humans. Sharpened rocks, chopped trees, traces of fires. It's slight, but I can tell. Before I go any further, it's time I do something I've been putting off for far too long.

I have a lot of spare small souls, so let's spend those on my organs. It'll take ten souls to get one part to 200%. So let's upgrade.. Brain, Heart, Lungs, Stomach, Intestines, Muscles, Bone marrow, Veins, and Arteries. That will leave me with 26 souls. Since I'm not stupid, I'll be doing all of that separately.
Oddly, the feeling is different for each body part. My brain feels cold, and kinda wobbly. My heart is hot, and seems to be surging outwards. My lungs feel like they're getting ripped apart. First upwards, then outwards, then compressing inwards. My stomach just hurts, like it's shrinking, and also like someone threw a sea urchin in there. My intestines swell and unwind, coiling around itself in new and uncomfortable ways. My muscles spasm, and I feel electricity spark throughout every fiber.
My bones crackled and trembled. Like they were scrunching together. My arteries and veins I did together, and was by far the most strange one. I've felt a variety of emotions during the reinforcement process, all of them negative. But this was.. Pleasurable. It felt amazing, like honey seeping into my body, tickling me all the way through. I enjoyed it at first, reveling in the lovely feeling, until I noticed how little control I had over my body.
As if I was stuck in jello, my body was unresponsive. I fell awkwardly, unable to exert any fine control. Emotions of panic and pleasure mixed in my mind, leaving me feeling disturbed and uncomfortable. All the reinforcements took a few minutes, which I mostly mediated through. But this felt like it took forever. Once it finally started to dull, my body was filled with dull aches, and an omnipresent buzzing feeling, like when you sleep on your arm, but across my whole body. It took my everything to not pass out, vulnerable as I am in this forest.
Now, since I have a spare skill point, I'll go ahead and upgrade [Dash].
< [1st] Tier [Dash] Has ranked up into [2nd] tier: [Rapid Dash]- Increases the speed stat by 300% for 5 minutes. Has a 5 minute cool down. Agility will also be raised while activated.>
I think it was a 100% increase before right? Also, what's agility? I mean, I know what it is but I want to see what the system version is.
Hidden stat? I have those? What are they?
< You don't need to know. >
What?
< Oh uh I mean.. >
< INSUFFICIENT AUTHORITY!!! >
God, I'm lonely…

Anyways, it's time I get a move on. I'm pretty excited at the prospect of finally meeting some humans. I begin moving toward the increasing amount of human traces. Rather than moving on the ground like some peasant, I flit through the trees. It's not really fast, but it sure is fun! Plus it trains my [Acrobatics].
I look at my skills while on the move. Pretty good if I say so myself.

Wow, my modularity menu has increased by quite a bit. I can feel the difference as well. I can tell my blood is pumping faster, and stronger. My muscles are the most obvious increase. I'm way stronger now. I'm not sure why it doesn't show in my status, but I'm at least twice as strong as it shows. In fact, with all the reinforcements, my stats are vastly higher than they appear. i find it interesting that agility doesn't appear on my stat board, though I guess that's just what hidden stats do. Hide.
I've been hopping through trees for a while now. I didn't bother to mention it before, but the area I'm in now is mountainous. The sun dazzles on various snow capped peaks. I spot footsteps in the snow. Even though I'm so far in the air, my vision is so good I could spot a needle in a haystack.
Soon, I notice smoke! And quite a lot of it too! Actually, a concerning amount. Is the forest on fire? I quickly hop closer to get a better look. Even if my eyes are enhanced, it doesn't matter if there's a million trees blocking them!
And then I came across it. A village. A feeling of hope is quelled before it even sprouts, as I notice the condition of said village.
It's on fire.
Or more specifically, it was on fire. Most of the small villages' houses are burnt frames or large piles of ash. The smoke was produced by the now barely smoldering fires. I can see now that the smoke is clearing out. If I took a second longer on my reinforcements I would have missed this place.
Not content with my tree top, I climb down to inspect the village personally. It's eerily quiet, and upon inspection, I notice the village was not just ravaged by fires, but something else. The ground is littered with blood. Small splatters here and huge pools over there, as if someone was opened up and dragged away. Chunks of chewed something litter near the blood stains. Like crumbs from an impromptu feast.
Unnerved as I am, I keep going. I investigate the non burned houses, finding basic furniture but no trace of any personal items. Proof that real people were here, and not some elaborate set up.
Come on, give me something. A sign that someone else is out there! Come on.. Come on!
My unnerve parts for my new found desperation. Reminds me of when I forgot to drink water all that time ago. The feeling fades at my reminiscence. I take a breath, and steady my shaking hands.
I go through the wreckage, more carefully than before. There are footsteps everywhere, clearly frantic. Differing in size, though some are clearly children..
Or were.
Perhaps its leap in logic to immediately think these are human traces. after all, I've seen monster wield technology before, like with that cannon wolves. why wouldn't they be able to make villages? certainty not the most far fetched thing I've experienced. Though I really hope that's not the case.
I search and search, and search some more. I investigate the entire perimeter. I invade every house, no fallen shelf unchecked, no loose floorboard unturned. Nothing, but more blood and signs of terror. you'd think that despite a fire, there would at least be metal or coins. Hell, even weapons or at least traces of them are completely non existent. There's a couple ashen bon fires and wells here and there, but no sign of any personal belongings. Its super creepy, almost more so then the blood stains and scattered mystery meat.
Then I find it, writing on the walls in an unknown language, found within a building I could only describe as some kind of church. It was much more decorated and complex than all the other houses, at least that I could tell from the few that were still standing. Scribbled writing, either done by a child or in fear. Perhaps both. If only this was enough, to convince me that I'm not alone. But with all this destruction around me, I feel more alone than I ever have before.
“GGGgGgGAAAaAAAAAaAAAAHHHHHHHhHHHHHHHHHHhHHHHHhHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!”
!
That wasn't me…
That wasn't me!
Despite the evident terror of the mysterious voice, a nervous grin stretched across my face.
I bolted toward the sound as I thought. I [Leapt] onto the nearest trees lower branches, and began sprinting towards the voice.
I know myself. I began to feel hopeless. Even with all the evidence, I couldn't believe it no matter what. I was afraid of getting my hopes up. Of the crushing feeling of knowing I'm truly alone. I know it would destroy me. Even as I made excuses I could feel my hope dying. This.. this is my last shot. If this isn't human, I don't think I'll be able to bounce back. Please, this is my last hope, tell me it wasn't in vain, tell me there's another! Tell me!!
And that's when I see it, slightly blurry in the distance. White skin, 2 legs, 2 arms, a round upwards protrusion. Though a bit fluffy around the head. I began crying, happiness surging, though crushed once again as I remembered what drew me here in the first place. My eyes became drawn to the savage shape looming over the distant human.
“DON'T WORRY! I'M HERE TO HEL-”
Gone. in an instant.
The creature unhinged its boney jaw, and in a swift, untrackable motion, it bit down on the fluffy human's head. It stood upwards, snapping its jaw so the arms and lower body would fall to the ground. I was only a hundred or so feet away. I heard the bones crack as it chewed, and I heard the screaming abruptly stop after one big crunch.
The creature was the spitting image of a windigo. Over twice my height, though this one certainly wasn't emaciated. I watched as the mangled body turned the ground red. The creature looked up at me. Its red eyes met mine, before it turned away and started eating the rest with out a care in the world, as if I was nothing but part of the landscape, or a spectater.
There is an illusion of two choices. Run or fight. But in my heart, there is only one possible outcome. Perhaps it is mere hubris that leads me to violence, after all, this monster supposedly just soloed an entire village not that long ago. Surely, a fight is not a good idea. But...
“ You.. Bastard..”
It stopped chewing, and slowly turned around to the source of the noise. It set its glowing red eyes on me, as I stood atop a low branch, with a poisoned arrow trained on it. The second I saw its eyes I fired. The master arrow whizzed through the air. A flash as its left arm blurred and deflected the arrow. The arrow spun in the air before landing softly in the snow. The monster set its shoulders, driving its arms into the snow, it blurred. It was almost untrackable, I could barely react as it appeared in front of me, midair.
It made a fist and launched at my face. I ducked beneath it, thinking I had time to escape before it immediately smashed its arm into the branch. The kinetic force from the blow sent me flying, slightly rattled, but otherwise undamaged. Wind seemed to erupt out of its fist, making a shockwave wherever it hit.
I quickly twist my body midair, landing safely on my feet. Without a second to think, the monster flies itself at me once again. It unwinds its fist, showing off its razor sharp claws. It begins swiping at me in wide sweeping motions.
He rips at my head, I duck. A downward strike from the left, I strafe right. Left hand goes for a sweeping strike in the middle, I back up. It rears back for a punch, and I dive to the left. It screams, leaving my ears ringing and on the verge of bleeding. It then lunges at me with its skeletal mouth unhinged. I dive to the side again, and the melee continues.
It may seem like I'm holding my own, but only barely. This thing is unbelievably fast. I can barely track it even with my incredible senses and reinforced nervous system. I can tell by the sound of the wind whistling from its every strike. If I mess up even a little, it could kill me in one hit. Even at the minimum it would shatter my bones or concuss me.
Even after all that, it leaves no openings. The only possible window I've seen is when it goes for the jab, but if I mess up the timing even a little it could be over for me. Finally, it rears back for another punch, but this time, I dive under it, pulling out my knife at the same time to slice through its stomach.
The creature screams in rage, the cut wasn't very deep but I can see its blood spill onto the snowy ground. I'd be over the moon if I wasn't so tired. I'm not sure how to really beat this thing. The monster clutches its stomach with one hand, before it raises its head and begins howling. The scream fills the entire forest, changing from a wolf's bark to a human's scream.
It blinks forwards, sending its fist into my gut. I surge backwards twenty feet and roll through the snow. I tremble slightly from the impact, but I quickly recover and stand on my feet. But before I can even ready my stance it flies at me again, claws out stretched.
I hop backwards, the strike narrowly missing my stomach. Its claw slams into the ground, and the creature's red eyes stare at me, full of hate. I begin running away, right as I'm about to use [dash] I feel a strange energy coerce around the monster. The energy shifted from a calm neutral to a terrifying danger, [High hound] switched what sense it was using, going from that strange energy detection, to danger detection.
I feel the creature rip upwards with one hand, and the feeling of doom began rapidly encroaching. I threw myself to the side as I watched a nearly invisible, teal tinged blade rip through the tree that was just in front of me.
The wendigo charged towards me once again, with teal light blanketing its fingers. Ripples of energy flitted between its claws, as it ripped its other arm to the side to throw another blade at me. If it wasn't for that teal light, it would be like the sky itself was warping. I ducked underneath the second blade, and watched helplessly as it bisected the three trees that were just in front of me.
I started running to the right, and felt with my senses to see what it would do next. It was staring at me, and once again it threw its other arm to the side, releasing its third blade right towards me. As my position was now diagonal to the monster, its blade missed me by a solid foot. I began running towards my only hope, my only method of escape.
There's no way I can beat that thing. I could barely keep up with its speed, and I can feel my stamina rapidly exhausting itself. My best attempt at a counter attack just pissed it off. And now it can do magic!? That's just plain cheating. My best guess is some kind of wind magic, judging by the little affect around its claws. Which means [high hound] can sense magic! To an extent.. Actually, I bet that was in its description. How do I keep forgetting those?
The only way I can escape this thing is by losing it in the forest, or destroying the path to get to me. That's right, I'm going to The Ravine! I'll run like my life depends on it, (cause it does) and then destroy the tree after I'm across. I'm sure nothing- nope. Not doing that. I know better.
I run and I run and I run. I constantly use [Tracing] to head straight for my bridge. Suddenly, I feel the wendigo right on the edge of my awareness again, and quickly getting closer.
Ah, that's right. It IS faster then me isn’t it? Well let's fix that. [Rapid Dash]!
I suddenly accelerate extremely fast, my surroundings blur around me for a moment as my eyes adjust to the new speed. What does my speed stat look like now?
Speed 160 (x4) (+5A)
oh.
I burst forth, scattering flurries of snow in my wake, leaving a disastrous trail behind me. Which is good, that might make it harder for it to find me. But I have a feeling that's wrong. When I was moving around earlier, its head was tracking exactly where I was, even when it didn't have a direct eyeline. I think it has some kind of tracking skill. Which is a terrifying thought, but I'm about halfway to the ravine. I mean, I'm also halfway through my dash, but who's counting? It'll probably run out a little before I reach the bridge. Hopefully I'm making enough distance between this thing that stalling out early won't matter.
<[High Hound] Experience threshold Reached. Lv1 -> Lv2>
< Stat adjustment delayed until user is out of danger >
The Ravine is finally in sight. Right as I cross the forest’s threshold onto the barren land surrounding the gap, [dash] goes on cooldown. I'm absolutely exhausted, but all I need to do is cross that bridge, then I'm home free. I spot the log and begin running towards it.
Right as I think i'm finally safe, I begin to hear trees crack behind me. I already know what it is, but I look back anyways. It's the wendigo, and its even more pissed off then before. In a rush of energy, I once again look back while still running and see strands of teal energy pour out of its chest, tracing glowing runes across its entire body. Power infuses its claws, and they actively grow in size, a layer of fiery teal energy blanketed over them.
The monster rears back and swings both of its arms forward, creating two huge arcs overlapping each other in an x formation. The energy fuses and coagulates, becoming more menacing as the magical formation flies towards me with tremendous force. At this point I was two thirds of the way across the tree bridge, before the cross slammed into the wood behind me, bisecting the log. With no support on the other end, it began to fall. Time seemed to stop.
No way. Like that.. Just like that? My story comes to an end like that? Swallowed by this dark void beneath me. Never to see my loved ones again? All my trials and tribulations become meaningless in an instant. Just like that? No…. no! I refuse. It's pointless, I know. But I'll keep running, keep fighting. Because I'm going to survive. Grow, and conquer this forsaken world!
“AND I'M NOT GOING TO LET SOME STUPID MONSTER STOP ME!!!”
Even as time halted, something within me grew. For the first time in my life, I felt unified. I became part of myself. And myself came onto me. My body became enshrouded in white fire, spreading from my heart, covering my body in cascading energy. The entire world became meaningless, I felt touched by the sky. I stomped on the wood beneath me, and with a single push, I bound across the world. With a single breath I fuel the flames of eternity.

In a near instant, I clear the bridge. The tree continues to fall into the caverns below as if a second hadn’t passed. I felt drained, my very will seemed to melt into nothing, and I was overcome with lethargy as I sank to the floor.
