Prologue

“Adolius,” the voice of the Ice Demon echoed through the desolate gorge and the abyss. Its insidious whisper creeped into the soul of the dark magician, striking it with a bone-chilling cold. “What news have you brought me?”

“My Lord, I have executed your bidding to the fullest. The mercenary force has descended upon the palace and awaits my signal. The queen is on the verge of birthing the long-awaited heir, either this very day or the next. And then…”

“Fear and confusion swirl within your soul,” the voice intoned. “It seems as though some vital truth weighs heavy on your heart, holding you back. But have no fear, magician. You need not hide anything from me. Speak freely, and tell me all you know.”

Adolius cast his gaze upon the blazing eyes of his master, his lips barely moving as he whispered, “The court physician has brought word that the queen shall bear twins. More than one heir shall soon grace our kingdom.”

The mage struggled to stand tall, but his rigid body seemed frozen in a huddled posture position. Yet despite the fear and cold that gripped him, his mind continued to pulsate in the foggy reaches of his consciousness.

Demon Sheah’s blazing eye sockets narrowed as a nervous scowl marred his already bitter countenance. He writhed and strained, his shackled hands reaching in vain for freedom from the heavy chains that bound him to the stone. Blood vessels pulsed red within Sheah’s semi-translucent blue body, and the necklace of runes and hieroglyphs blazed with an inner fire.

The demon’s lower half was one with the rocky mass. The dark mage gazed at his master's toned torso, the madness gleaming in his eyes and the soft golden locks of hair cascading down his exposed shoulders.

“Adolius, heed my words. You must leave but one prince alive. I command you to dispose of the royal couple and one of the heirs, but do so with subtlety, so as not to arouse suspicion. The surviving prince shall be nurtured under your guidance, and on the day of his coronation, he shall set me free. Should you succeed in your task, I shall bestow upon you the gift of immortality and the power to rule the Five Lands. Now, go forth and fulfill your mission.”

Flurries of snowflakes danced into the endless abyss, filling the gorge with a sense of peace and tranquility. High above Adolius’ head, an eagle that had carried the mage to Lord Sheah on its wings glided serenely, thoughts of anything sinister far from its mind.
