They dream of drawing the attention of a system seed to serve as their familiar. If you can get a familiar, your own personal system, you become their champion, showered with skill gifts, talent enhancements, and opportunities to grow as strong as mortally possible. All of this is given in exchange for aide finding the familiar a planet of their own to take root in. A planet their champion would get to shape and rule alongside them for the rest of their enhanced life. The greatest legacy to leave behind, passed down through administrator familial lines. Terra didn't want that kind of power. She got by happily enough with her single, measly talent for shifting. She had a basic job that brought in just enough credits to keep a roof over her head and a new book on her shelves every few weeks. All the power and adventure she ever wanted was to be found between the pages of those books, while she remained safe in the comfort of her leaky apartment. She didn't want more and didn't have a family to support. Her family didn't want her. Not after she had failed to live up to the role she'd been raised for. Born as the heir to the Terran system administration and slated for a political marriage, Terra had give up the promise of a soft life full of priveledge in favor of her freedom. Unfortunately for her, one of the seeds of the system she'd abandoned had other ideas for the course of her life. Posing as an injured stray, it managed to trick Terra into forging the familiar bond with it.  With the bond comes the power Terra never asked for. Yet, that power brings her more freedom than she'd dreamed could be hers. Perhaps a life of adventure found in the Interim, instead of between the pages of her novels, won't be so bad after all. If only she can convince her familiar to abandon its purpose of laying down roots.
