MORAL TURPITUDE
By Layne Winklebleck
When young attorney Ange Parker risks her career to warn the subject of a lawsuit charging "moral turpitude," she sets in motion an adventure that will carry her into the highest levels of corporate power and into the deepest jungles of Costa Rica and Borneo, pursued by a sadistic murderer. The accused is Davis Sheffield, billionaire majority stockholder of Sheffield Industries, a private defense contractor, and he did indeed enjoy kinky exploits with his beloved but now deceased wife Maureen, who died along with their young daughter in a suspicious private plane crash five years earlier. Emotionally wounded by the loss, he has little interest in running the company but is compelled to maintain his position to safeguard his wife’s legacy, an imaginative and generous charitable foundation funded by the company. Warned by Ange that jealous Sheffield family members are scheming to remove him from management, Davis realizes those youthful exploits have come back to haunt him. To avoid being served, he goes into hiding in San Francisco where, free from social constraints, he mixes with colorful street people, publishes a radical underground pamphlet and falls under the sway of a beautiful Pagan dominatrix, who plays with Davis using artful forms of psychodrama through which he finally begins to heal.
Before leaving for California, Davis has convinced Ange to serve as his proxy at Sheffield Industries in New Jersey, armed with powers of attorney, unlimited funds and high-powered legal help. Ange reluctantly agrees but it soon becomes clear that she is playing with the big boys and the stakes are much higher than they had realized. When Davis learns that Daniel Sheffield may have murdered his wife and child, he becomes obsessed with revenge. He organizes a makeshift posse to find Daniel at his drug-processing hideaway in the jungles of Costa Rica, a quest that turns into a nightmare ending with the kidnapping of Davis and Ange to Borneo by Daniel and the abduction of the rest of the posse by a Columbian paramilitary force affiliated with Daniel. With derring-do and some lucky breaks, Ange and Davis maneuver between corporate intrigues, the ruthlessness of a drug cartel, rogue CIA agents and a paranoid arms dealer. Devising creative strategies for survival in desperate circumstances, Ange and Davis eventually triumph as they gain unexpected strength and ultimate joy in their growing love for one another.
