Ch41. Artillery

The room around it had become rubble and began to climb up through the stone, why bother with one insect when one can go find hundreds. With each push, it went up further and further until it felt the light of the moon. With one final heave, it smashed through the final layer and basked its glorious body in the moonlight. It could sense the life in the surrounding mountains but a bit further than that It could sense a battlefield, it's favorite. Its chains gathered up its fleshy form and it began to rise into the air. Higher and higher, until finally, it rivaled the surrounding mountains. It was a faintly humanoid unsymmetrical mass, with arms reaching its supposed ankles and two pairs of insect-like legs. A smallish head rested upon massive shoulders, and directly below it a large blood-red eye with a black pupil formed.

With one earth-shaking step, it began to descend the slope it was on and towards its prey. As it moved bulges began to form on its back, and its chest began to expand until massive tears formed, revealing gold. Around its eye grew large golden teeth that slammed together forming a crude cage. After a second the bulges finally stretched further than it could, causing the flesh to snap, revealing large cylindrical weapons that rose high into the air. It continued to casually swagger down the mountain as its transformations took place. But unbeknownst to it, a shadow looked on in mild interest from the hole caused by the fleshy being’s ascent.

POV Shift (Why did I shift POV in the first place? I don’t remember why, probably for the fight. Maybe I’ll do another POV shift, who knows?)

As the flesh sentry became battle-ready, I studied its guns and armor with slight interest. The chest piece was lacking its ID number or a unique symbol, so it was more than likely one of the mass-produced sentries during the battles of hell’s reach. The later models tended to have no set armor but instead have the ability to build their own. And the earlier models had their ID or Symbol clearly engraved somewhere on the armor. But the problem with the deduction that it was a model from the hell’s reach battles, is the fact that its guns are from an earlier, stronger model, the runes were a dead giveaway. And the blatant jerry-rigging of the guns show that they weren’t the originals. So instead of being one of the common soldiers this particular individual probably had a part in a particular battle that comes to mind.

I was broken out of my ponderings when I heard the slowly rising whine of its Jericho trumpets. One of its guns took a steep angle and began to suck in the surrounding life force before using the sentry’s innate corruption to produce a near-solid concentration of very unstable magic. The particular guns that it has mounted are typically used for medium-ranged high yield artillery barrages. The shot that it's about to launch can probably level a square mile and will corrupt around ten miles around it. I should probably stop it before it brings unneeded attention by my territory. What I used to do in the field was destroy the breech as it went to fire, that would destroy the gun and dissipate the explosion to something reasonable, but that would also cause a lot more corruption than I’m willing to handle.

The Jericho trumpets soon reached their apex as the breech block closed. Ah, that sound brings back a few memories. The gun’s golden barrel began to shine with a black hue as it prepared to fire, and a rumbling shook the earth. Another method to disarm it was to destroy the two magic circuits in charge of pressurizing the magic, causing the bolt to return to a normal state slowly enough to not cause a huge explosion. Well, if I’m going to do anything, I better do it now. I withdrew a large splinter of bone I had created from one of the deer and pricked my wrist with it before carefully pinching its base before slinging it towards the massive gun.

Before the first one could even land, I launched a second one slightly adjacent from the first. Being a medium-ranged artillery gun most of the warding and armor protects the front and the back was left with significantly less. A weak point caused by the sheer energy requirement to fire each shot. With the help of my blood, the needle easily pierced the weak warding and sunk a finger's length into the armor reaching the central rune of the thirty-two that made up that circuit. The second pierced slightly above breaching the stability rune of the second circuit.

The effect was immediate, the gun prematurely fired due to the rapid depressurization, and the breech block was blown off, rendering the gun unusable without intensive repairs. The finely confined bolt had become more of a wave, going forwards and backward. In front of it, space splintered and clouds split, along with a wide stretch of trees being flattened. The concentration was high enough to become visible, displaying a beautiful yet deadly shimmer. Behind it a crater formed and much of the mountain where I sat was destroyed, and much of the facility beneath collapsed under the strain. I was, of course, right in the backblast, but I was fast enough to miss the brunt of it.

The Sentry stumbled and much of its body below the gun squished and lost form. It did not have time to properly brace for the recoil and was sent to the ground. The corruption within the magic was partly reabsorbed into the sentry while the rest latched its cruel talons deep within the soil. I was not looking forward to cleaning that up. Quickly recuperating from the malfunction, the sentry was back on its feet, though ten feet shorter from the flesh that was obliterated into fine dust, unable to be reincorporated into its body. I was of course not just sitting around and twitling my thumbs and was already preparing my next attack.
