Unfathomable darkness taints the world. Entire counties and provinces are now desolate and hateful wastelands haunted by evil and mutation. Such corrupted lands are now known simply as "Malorum", and their inhabitants are abandoned to the whims of whatever nightmarish creatures roam unchecked. The Gods have answered humanity's cries for salvation by bestowing Marks of Power, or "Benedictus", that amplify their talents and abilities. It is by the wisdom and might of those who have received Benedictus that the encroaching Malorum is held at bay. Daron, a poor but clever boy, dreams of one day receiving Benedictus so he can earn a noble title and the support of his town to drive back the encroaching Malorum. Despite the grim reality that none who possessed Benedictus have deigned to stave off the writhing darkness near his home for almost a decade.
