Dr. Maki Engazi is a somewhat disheveled ‘portist - a magican who specialises in teleporting objects or people on commission. One such commission, for a shadier element of the city of Balé, leads him into breaking into the office of his friend, and eccentric genius, Professor Chioté Hounsol. It’s there that he discovers she has been murdered.  Assassinations and conspiracies and ancient secret societies, greed, magic and the apotheosis of the human race. All Maki wants is to get away with his drunken procrastination without ending up in a shallow grave. And just maybe, Doing the Right Thing.
