“Barriers between dimensions shattered? World merging? Fighting against other world creatures? What’s all of this about?”

Huo Feng stared at the notification panel on his sight while stopping his mouth from chewing a food. It was a weird thing he never experience in his 16 years of life. He waved his hands in front of his face, trying to wipe it off, but failed. The panel was still there. When he turned his face around, the panel followed. He tried closing his eyes for a minute, but he still could see the panel after he opened his eyes.

Feeling dejected, he looked at an old man who were having a breakfast in front of him. This old man was his father who was burning his life to raise him since the death of his mother 10 years ago. He also having a shocked face and occasionally, he waved his hands and sometimes rubbed his eyes.

“Dad, did you also saw a blue panel on your sight?” he asked.

“Feng’er, what is this thing? Why can’t I shook it off?”

“I don’t know dad. Maybe it will disappear shortly”, he replied.

“Is this related to what happened last night?” thought Hou Feng.

Last night, his sleep was disturbed by a tremor. In the beginning, he didn’t care about it because it was just a small tremor and this town were not inside an earthquake area. But after it continued after a while and an objects inside the house started falling down, he forced himself to run outside. It took a while before the tremor calming down. Worrying about his old man who was working a night shift at a hospital morgue, he grabbed a torchlight only to find out that it was broken. Having no choice, he put a faith on his memory and start walking in the dark toward the morgue. The journey to the morgue will take about 10 minutes using the usual route. But, if he use the route through the graveyard, he will save 4-5 minutes. The hospital and the graveyard were located at the easternmost of Boulder Town because it was the furthest from the iron mine which located at the western side of the town.

“Should I go through the graveyard?” he thought while walking slowly as his eyes began to familiarize with the darkness. His heart shuddered when thinking about the graveyard. Everyone will stay away from the graveyard, especially in a situation like this. But, he was a son of a gravedigger, so he should not afraid of a graveyard.

“Lets go through the graveyard. I hope dad is alright”, he reassured himself.

He safely reached the destination and found his father was standing outside the morgue with two of his colleague. They were talking with hushed tone. With the help of the light from their lighter, Huo Feng could discern the terrified expression on their face. Initially, he felt relieved that his father was safe but now he also feel worry after looking at their faces. Something must have happened.

“Dad, what happened?” he asked as soon as he stood next to his father.

“Feng’er, thank god you’re safe. Is our house okay?”

“Our house is okay, just several items in the house were broken. But, I can’t check what were broken because the electricity was out. Dad, you look terrified, what happened here?”

“The corpses, they were emitting a black gasses from their bodies. I never seen anything like this before. When the tremor started, we were processing the body of Grandpa Chu who passed away several hours ago. We wait for the electricity to come back, but it didn’t. So we use the lighter to tidy things up before continue later. Then we found out about the black gasses. It was terrifying”

“Is that true, Dad? That was impossible”

“It’s true. Here, take this lighter. You can go and check it yourself”

“...”

Hou Feng reluctantly took the lighter but didn’t move his legs. He only stared blankly at the door of the morgue. He couldn’t decide what to do and he was thinking about endless possibilities.

“Dad, what if the corpse move? You know, like those in the zombie movies”, he asked.

“We also think about that, so just now, we tied the body with ropes and wrapped it tightly with a bedsheet. I bet it won’t be able to move”, replied one of the old man next to Hou Feng’s father.

“That was good”

“Are you going to see the see the corpse?” asked Uncle Cheng.

“Errr... I will do it tomorrow”, answered Hou Feng as he swiped a sweat on his forehead. Who the devil would dare to check the corpse out of curiosity after he heard the story like that?

After that, they headed to Grandpa Chu’s house to inform his family about the situation. The news caused a huge ruckus at the house as the superstitions kicked in. Even the neighbours who came to help the family to go through the grieving period deserted the house, fearing they also will be inflicted by the bad luck.

After delivering the news, they didn’t return to the morgue but returned to their house. It was a long night and they couldn’t get asleep.

“Dad, I wonder what happen to Grandpa Chu. Do you want to go to work after breakfast and check it?” asked Hou Feng after returned from his reminiscence.

“Hmmmphhh, if you’re that curious, go check yourself. I’ll never ever return to that place. Even if someone pay me hundred million, I won’t go back”

Hearing his father’s reply, Hou Feng could only smile. “I’m just curious”, he said.

“Oooooohhhh”

“What is it Dad?”

“The blue panel, it disappeared by itself. Now, I can rest easy. Hahahaha”

A while after, Hou Feng’s panel also disappeared.

After the breakfast, the duo tidy up their house before heading out to the house of one of his father’s friend. Before they could go far from their house,

“KYAAAAAAAA.....”

A heart wrenching scream could be heard from the direction of the graveyard. Both of them turned their head toward the graveyard at the same time and them looked at each other’s face. Hou Feng could feel the uncertainties from the face of his father. He too felt the same. What should he do right now? Most reasonable choice was running to the graveyard to confirm the situation, maybe the lady who just scream needed an immediate help. But there came his memories about Grandpa Chu’s body last night and also the blue panel this morning.

“Dad, what should we do?” he whispered.

“I’m not sure. But I think we should check the graveyard”

“Okay”

“Wait, you go back to the house and bring the hoe. Who know we might need them. I’ll wait you at the entrance”

“Okay dad, I’ll go right now”

Hou Feng quickly ran to his house and grab two hoes. Then he immediately sprinted toward the graveyard to rendezvous with his father. Half the way, he saw his father speed walking toward the house. Hou Feng’s worry intensified as he saw his father who was clearly more terrified than last night.

“He look worse than last night”, thought Hou Feng.

“Dad ...”

“Run Feng’er, Run !!!” his father shouted before he could say anything.

His father immediately grab his right arm and dragged him toward their house. Every few minutes, he kept turning his head toward the graveyard, looking for something. The grip on his arm was so tight that made Hou Feng frowned from pain but he kept his mouth shut. He knew it was unwise for him to disturb his father right now. He gripped the hoes in his hands tighter and loosen his body, ready for action if anything came out from the graveyard. The thing that could make his father this terrified must be extremely terrible.

His father let him go when they reached the house. He didn’t say anything. With trembling hands and shaking legs, he took out two bags from the bedroom and gave one of it to Hou Feng.

“Feng’er, pack your clothes enough for a week and pack some of mine too. Don’t forget about daily necessities. Go, quick. We don’t have much time”

Hou Feng say nothing and quickly followed the order. His father went to the kitchen. While packing his clothes, occasionally he could hear clattering noises from the kitchen. A few minutes later,

“Feng’er, let’s go. Come, quick”, urged his father.

“Okay”, replied Hou Feng although he still didn’t finished packing the clothes. He zipped the bag and followed his father.

They moved north.

Hou Feng watch his father’s face. His eyes were unfocused and his body still trembling although it was lesser from before. Hou Feng mustered his spirit and asked.

“Dad, where we’re going?”

“I don’t know. I just want to go away from the graveyard”

“What happened at the graveyard?”

His father didn’t reply but his trembling immediately intensified, almost made him tripped.

“... Errr, It’s ok Dad, tell me about it later”

He felt regret and wished he never asked the question.

After a while, he got an idea.

“Dad, how about we go to the police station. You can tell them about what happened at the graveyard and let them handle it. If we’re lucky, we might be able to hide there”, he suggested.

His father stopped his step and look at his face.

“You... you’re right. They might be able to handle it. Let’s go”
