Chapter 1

I hum quietly to myself as the night passes. It is a clear night, with a full moon out. I take a sip of my wine, there is a hint of sweetness from the blackberries used. I can almost make out my reflection in the glass, my midnight black hair swept to the side with the sides shaved, very much in an officer’s fashion. My dark eye and perfectly curved nose make quite the dashing sight. I chuckle to myself at the vain thoughts, my mind tends to wander when bored. I was tasked to watch the right flank of the army while it moves to make a dawn attack on the demon’s main beachhead. “Couldn’t they have left someone where with me” I thought. In that hour or two before dawn when the night is darkest is when orcs come. Apparently, we aren’t the only ones planning a dawn offensive. I wonder if this is the main flanking element, they only have a little over a company’s worth of orcs marching towards me.

The orcs march until they are about 50 meters from me. “Turn back and you may still live” I yell in orc tongue. This only seems to rile them up more, “dumb brutes” I think “don’t know when someone is trying to do you a favor”. I active my magic programs, and sit back and watch the carnage. The program I activated uses my mana to gather surrounding pebbles to send at my enemy’s weak points, the pebbles are launched at just below the speed of sound so they don’t break before impact. I could have the pebbles be magically reinforced, but that’s just too much mana to use on pebble. After about half the orcs are dead, there is a commotion coming from the back, a particularly large orc nearly 12’ pushes his way to the front, and lets out a loud war cry. My pebbles seem ineffective against him, on closer look a mana barrier can be seen when the pebbles get close to the large orc. It seems a small change of plans is needed I’ll have to use –

I wake up from my dream; when dreams are just old memories I consider that dream to be a poor one. I could have been dreaming something new and exciting, not old and boring. I shut the magic alarm I programed off. “I miss my maids, they know just the right way to wake me” I grumble. I swing out of bed and start getting ready for the first day of the school year. Putting on my nice robes, and making a fine breakfast of eggs and black coffee. “I’ve heard there is supposed to be a temporal mage starting this year, that will be cool” I think as I get ready. “The school has been too long absent a temporal mage, plus his class is after one of mine so I can sit in every once and a while” I laugh.
