In the isolated city of Fern, the slave guilds control almost everything, from placing a curfew at night to having more power than the city's legitimate government. Because of the city's geographical location not being on any trade routes, it has been mostly neglected by the central government, which allowed the city to nurture such corruption.  A new source of untapped power has been discovered recently: Magic. Due to its complicated nature and how not much is known about it, the slave guilds cannot exploit it for much of anything. The only major use of magic for the slave guilds is to create a binding of sorts between the slave and its owner, in which both the slave and the owner can sense the other's presence when one is near the other.  Engel, a young girl who is a slave, had a lucky break during the middle of an auction where she was going to be sold and made a run for it.
