Here, where gods once tread, people push the boundaries of what's possible, mutilating themselves with cosmetic surgery in a practice known as flesh-weaving or cleaving their organic parts for super-charged prosthetics known as Scripter-armaments. Constructs—automatons of every shape and size, forged through the combined arts of Sorcery, Scripting, and Mechaniks—serve their human masters as unthinking, obedient servants. For an intrepid mind of means, Kunlun City is a paradise, the last bastion of a decaying Dynasty with foreigners pounding at their gates and revolutionaries in the Provinces.   Fang Xin, an orphan of very little means and certainly the furthest thing from an inventor or flesh-weaver, calls Kunlun City home. His destiny was cut from stone, and like a thousand other orphans, likely to end in one of two ways: get adopted by an abusive craftsman who couldn't keep an apprentice otherwise or die in a ditch after an unremarkable life as a peasant in one of the world's most industrialized cities. But when a supernatural kidnapping goes awry, a whole new side of Kunlun City reveals itself to Xin, one filled with dangerous entities and demons from the storybooks of yore. After striking a deal with a disgraced, fallen serpent goddess, Xin embarks on a mission to alter the fate of all those powerless to shape their own destinies in Kunlun City—the land once inhabited by the gods.
