Earth has been integrated into Reality, along with the rest of the universe. Sam has been wanting life to just be more for years now. He felt that the world had squandered him, and that it couldn't show his true talents. He escaped to books, not doing much else.  The arrival of Reality has given him expectations for who he will be, but only time can tell if he becomes someone noteworthy or is just another ink-blotch in history.
