Alan is a guy living his life, in no way unordinary. His only aspiration in his life has been to get into the medical school of his (or his parents) dreams. Outside of that goal, he is not eager or willing to do much at all, just live his simple life. After the entrance exam however, he suddenly gains a new desire, a new resolve - a purpose, for which he is willing to go to extensive lengths.
