Synopsis
You'd think being loved by all spirits doesn't sound all that bad. By forming a contract with different ones, you gain access to their abilities — mostly elemental in nature. So, technically, should you keep befriending more spirits and gaining their trust, you could have an ability to use most, if not all spells in the existence. It was great at first. Earth was overrun by monsters and normal people gained powers to fight off the waves of different invasive species from beyond the stars. Zombies, werewolves, dwarves, orcs — you name it, we had it. I've made many mistakes over the years, but the biggest one was coming in contact with the Spirit King. Spirits, although helpful and can provide their magic, are not human. They don't work under the same rules as mortals do. They lack emotions. They don't know what empathy is. As I've asked the Spirit King to turn back the time, He did so. Over and over. Thousands of times. Maybe a million? I stopped counting. Each death, I was sent into a different world. Sometimes I'd come back to Earth, maybe slightly changed in some way. The kind of Earth I was never born because my parents died before giving birth to me. The kind of Earth that was never overrun by monsters. Or I'd be sent to a completely different place. In a middle of the war, spells hurled left and right, a conflict I had no idea what it was about. I'd either be sent into a body of a baby, or into a body of a teen kid. Gender never mattered. I think I was a guy at the very beginning? My magic never faded over the many reincarnations. The spirits I had contracts with would always find me in the end, for better or for worse."That's it," I said in my last life. I usually remember the ten past lives before letting them rot in the back of my head. For the past maybe few thousand lives I'd die of old age, since there weren't many threats that could actually pose a danger to me, but still, reincarnating all the time was never something I wanted. The spirits knew how mortals die and just stop existing. Since I was such a good friend to the spirits, the Spirit King thought it was SUCH an amazing idea to force my soul into the reincarnation process. In my last life, I told the Spirit King plainly. If you reincarnate me again, I will just become a farmer. I will not save the world, I will not partake in wars or battles. I will just quit. So I did.
