Max Tenebri, a rather crude and abrasive university student (and quite healthy, not at all socially inept otaku) seems to be lacking ambition, and generally suffering from a malaise that he'd rather keep to himself. After a confrontational exchange with his girlfriend (how on earth he got her, no one knows), he suddenly gets enveloped in a cloud of dense black smoke and awakes to find himself trapped in a version of Japan that can only be described as fictional. Strangely, the fiction looks all too familiar for an anime fan like himself...
