Synopsis

I Am Monster is a twist on the isekai fiction genre where our protagonist is brought to this world by forces beyond its understanding and forced to adapt to modern society.  It is initially amoral, cunning, yet entirely ignorant, but it is infinitely adaptive - in ways which may surprise even itself.  Is a terrifying, shapeshifting, carnivorous monster what Earth needs to meet the challenges of a gradually progressing system apocalypse? This is a dark fantasy novel, with themes including graphic violence, moral philosophy, and elements of urban fantasy you may see in other works of fiction.  Our hero, such as it is, is thrust into a world with wonders and dangers it cannot comprehend, forced to adapt faster than those trying to hunt it can learn.  In this world of hidden magic, technology, monsters, and men, what we need to save us from the beasts who are thriving in the hidden dark is one that they must learn to fear. Our main character is a nameless, cunning, shapeshifting predator from a distant moon.  In the midst of a thunderstorm, dying from the attacks of its prey, The Monster is transported to Earth, circa 2024, and must learn to adapt.  It has a suite of abilities, including the ability to learn from its food and assume the identity of that food to varying degrees of success.  The creature itself is heavily inspired by John Carpenter's The Thing - a movie I would highly recommend anyone who has finished all of my released chapters go watch - but it is not identical.  It has limitations that The Thing does not, and it is not interested in eating literally every living being on the planet.  Also, the antagonists do not include Kurt Russell, much as I would love to write in a few quips about his throwing arm or his acting in Escape from New York. Content notes - as a dark fantasy story, this features an explicitly predatory protagonist.  It will do things you will not like.  I do, however, have lines I will not cross.  I do not, will not, and cannot write sexual assault in any form.  Sexual violence exists in this world, just like it does in ours, but it will not happen "on camera," and if it is ever used as a plot point, it will be done with care to keep in mind the experiences of those suffering from a history of experience with that kind of barbarity.  While The Monster may murder and eat someone, wearing their skin in service of its goals, it has no need for torture and no desire for sex.  It is capable of mimicking the act of sex and may or may not do so at points in the story, but will not do so "on camera," so please don't worry about strange tentacle scenes.  This novel may feature an amoral protagonist you would probably not want to meet, but it is not the greatest monster in this story.
