Chapter 35: The Father's Request

Chapter 35: The Father's Request

As the wind calmed from the wisps departing, Lawrence walked over to the blood and flesh stained robes where the Marquis had been standing. Scanning his interface, there seemed to be no longer any undead around.

"Come on, let's get the prisoners!" Lawrence beckoned at the three who were huddled over at the pillar.

"Hey, uh, Lawrence, have you ever thought about joining a mercenary company--" Leviathan said eagerly and Lawrence almost snorted.

"Sorry, I have two policies in life. I'm afraid to lose and I'm afraid to die," Lawrence smiled and Dunkirk led the way cautiously, always standing within arm's reach of Lawrence. What particularly amused Lawrence was how paranoid Dunkirk was, which was understandable of course. Even the slightest sound of drapes being blown apart, Dunkirk had grabbed Lawrence's gloved hands and ran to hide behind the guardian.

As they walked down the depressing looking corridors and a particularly treacherous flight of steps, they reached what looked like a scene out of Saw.

Rows upon rows of cells with rusty iron grills as well as men, women and children wearing all sorts of clothes were in the cells, some already dead while some were barely clinging onto life.

"Father!" Dunkirk shouted, running ahead to the last cell.

"F...Foolish child... Why did you come back!" Karl rasped, lying on what seemed to be a folded towel. Aside from the father, there were two seriously injured looking man and woman in plate armour.

"M-Mass Healing Word!" Lawrence shouted loudly, as a wave of healing energy washed through the room and those who were injured suddenly felt better.

"F-Father!" a female paladin with the sigil of a sun on her plate armour rushed forward, having been healed.

"A...Ah... God's energy is it... I feel it..." Karl coughed, as if gasping for breath.

Could it be...

Lawrence raised his sword and smashed the lock on the door of the cell and threw it open, rushing to kneel beside the elderly Father.

"Stand back! That is Father Karl Franz, the head of--" the male crusader stood up, throwing himself feebly at Lawrence who shrugged him off.

It is... It is the Rot Disease...

Panacea...

Lawrence quickly took out a Panacea from his bag, which was a basic item to cure poisons.

"W-What is this? What are you doing?" the female paladin asked, her eyes wide and eyeing Lawrence's sword.

"Sister Marilyn, this is Lawrence Carstein, a warrior who helped us fight our way in, please, trust him!" Dunkirk begged as Craig raised his own bow, "Sister, Lawrence here is my friend, I suggest you keep your eyes off his sword," Craig smiled and Leviathan moved to peel the crusader off Lawrence.

Sister Marilyn moved aside reluctantly to allow Lawrence to get closer and Lawrence said gently to the elderly Father, "I will be administering some medicine now, please swallow it."

"Y-You... Fought your way in... Leav- Leave while you can... The Marquis..." Karl struggled to say before Lawrence tipped the Panacea gently into his mouth. As the Father swallowed the medicine, Lawrence casted Greater Restoration on the man as well, along with Cure Serious Wounds.

As the glass bottle is emptied, Karl's eyes, which had been weak and near shut slowly opened.

"I..." Karl moved to sit up, with Sister Marilyn rushing forward, along with the Crusader.

"No need," Karl said, raising his hand to stop them. With his own strength, the elderly Father sat up, looking around and then at his wounds.

"You... What is your name?" Karl asked, looking at Lawrence who swallowed his saliva, "I am Lawrence Carstein, adventurer and merchant."

"Good lad!"

As Karl stood up, the paladin and crusader looked at the Father in amazement.

"You, have done a great service to us and our order. Now, I have business to settle with that piece of--" Karl said, stretching, opening the door.

"Ah, if it is the Marquis, you need not look for him. Lawrence here has already killed him," Leviathan said, releasing the crusader. Karl turned to Lawrence, an incredulous expression on his face.

"He is indeed dead, Father Karl," Lawrence said, standing up, picking up unsheathing his blade once more to break open the remaining cells.

Father Karl and the paladin, Sister Marilyn and the feeble looking crusader left their cells, guided by Craig, Dunkirk and Leviathan left, presumably to see the puddle of what was left of Marquis Donovan.

Lawrence busied himself freeing and healing the remaining alive in the cells and blessed the bodies of the fallen with a Consecrate spell so that they would not rise up as the dead. Was Marquis Donovan the final level, Lawrence wondered. Would there come a day that there will be someone stronger than he is?

As Lawrence helped the wounded, the small party returned, with a most gleeful Karl Franz.

"You, my child, would you like to join the Paladins or Crusaders? You have amazing potential, no, even having far surpassed I!"

Suddenly, Lawrence's mind flashed to his experiences playing Kingdom Come: Deliverance and the strict hours to observe for prayers and others.

"No, I am definitely not interested, Lawrence replied, trying to sound as reasonable and polite as possible.

"Say, child, what was the medication you gave me earlier?" Father Karl asked, his voice now cheerful, upbeat and even loud, so loud that Lawrence's ear hurt a little.

"Ah, we make it in Black Bay, it is called the Panacea?" Lawrence replied, taking out another bottle. If one held the bottom of the bottle against the light, they would be able to see the sigil of the Owl, which was Lawrence's.

"Good lad! Maniard, take note of this Black Bay Village, go and see what medicines we can buy for our men! Marilyn, go and search the compound with..." Karl turned around, as if wanting to point out more subordinates for the mission. However, Karl was reminded that most of his men has already perished, causing him to fall silent awkwardly.

"I think... We should bring all these people to a safe place first, Father," Lawrence said, pointing at all the newly healed, who were looking absolutely terrified. The elderly Father nodded and as Craig helped with the evacuation, Leviatian acted as a guide, with the walls still so familiar to him. Dunkirk, Marilyn and Maniard the crusader followed the Father as he walked beside Lawrence.

"Lawrence, my boy, this old man needs your help still," Father Karl Franz whispered and Lawrence turned sideways to look at the elderly Father curiously.

"The Butcher is back. We need to deal with the Butcher."
