Synopsis
Humanity has changed. By the year 2456 many issues that have plagued us as a species no longer exist. Through scientific advancement we have learned how to shape atmospheres, make colonies in space, and destroy pollution at its source. Through medical advances no longer do people have to worry about diseases, the loss of limbs, or birth defects. After all with prosthetics becoming perhaps superior to normal limbs, and nanites able to fix any issues in someone's body, or make the body better than any human could possibly be on its own, these are issues of the past. Through social change war, poverty, and discrimination are a thing of the past. Humanity is unified and crime has fallen to unprecedented levels.
Though, with all these issues fixed, What is there for humanity to focus on? Their vices of course. every one of these is easily satisfied of course, except for one, humanity's call for blood. At first, things were simple, they just watched combat sports of old, MMA, boxing, kick boxing etc. But soon that wasn't enough carnage, so people tried robots, but they weren't human enough. So in the year 2430 the government, backed by wealthy investors, announced a new solution, the blood pits. They took those covicted of violent crimes, murder, rape, and robery, assault, battery, etc. and made them fight. There were no rules except for when they fought until one quit or couldn't fight anymore. Those who won were treated amazingly inside the prison, better food, custom rooms, should they not have a life sentence, wealth for when they were released, and those who lived until their release were stars upon their re entrance to the world after a one year rehabilitation. For those with a life sentence, it was their only chance at freedom. Should anyone become the champion and reign for an entire year they would have the chance to challenge the Warden. Should they win, a year's rehabilitation and freedom were theirs, regardless of the amount of time remaining on their sentence. In the 26 years since the announcement only 9 have fulfilled the criteria, only 7 have challenged, and only one succeeded. of the six who failed not one survived the fight.
The public loved it, soon there was a blood pit on every planet large with a large enough human population. money flowed into the scene as sponsors paid millions for their picks to wear their gear, clothes, and have their name on their banners. Championship matches were treated as holidays, and should champions clash systems would watch with bated breath.
Of course, not everyone loved it. John's father was one of the few who despised it. The last kickboxing champion earth had ever seen he had blamed it for everything wrong with his life. Of course John begged to differ. All he had seen of his father was a drunk old man who had gambled away everything upon the death of his wife. Even worse he had forced John to learn everything he knew about kickboxing, despite its worthlessness in society. Well, It won't be worthless for John much longer with the way everything has turned out.
